Trying to Date a Stumpjumper

No i'm not trying to take it out to dinner and shag it...
I want to figure out how old it is.
It's a frame only i've acquired and it's in poor condition although there are no cracks or dents - just very bad state of finish and very rusty.
It's got a serial number on the underside of the BB shell. Would i be able to find out what model it was from this?
It's got a shimano square taper bottom bracket fitted and has a Shimano SGX chainset.
It has V brake mounts and no disk mounts and has an unusual feature I haven't seen on a bike before and that is a metal cable guide welded to the frame at the top of the seattube where the rear brake cable outer would normally lie and cause cable rub. It almost looks like a piece of outer cable except it is made of metal and attached to the frame - it's about 1.5inches long.
I am going to get the wet and dry paper out and give it a good seeing to at the weekend then probably get it powdercoated and restored however i'd like to get it looking as authentic as possible so would like to find out the year and model so i can hunt down the necessary components.
My guess is it's a late 90s model due to the V brakes plus the non Octalink BB although that's not to say the BB was replaced at some point.
If I hung STX 7 speed on it I don't think I'd be a million miles away and I think i'll stick a rigid fork on it although I do have a Rockshox Duke that can be adjusted down to 80mm travel which may be acceptable.
Any pointers or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
