SLX crank pedal thread washer???

I just fitted an SLX crank, the double version with the steel pedal thread insert.

It came with a big flat washer held over the thread with a bit of wire. Should I leave this on?

I'm assuming its there to stop the pedal axel dig into the alloy arm but looking at the back of the arm I noticed that the pedal thread is a couple of mm shy off fully screwing into the arm so just wanted to be sure the washer is not just packaging!

Cheers

Yer, use the washer. Not desperate if you dont mind you- but stops pedals that dont have a round bit that mate crank scuffing the face.
