Can you use Shimano chain pins on KMC and / or SRAM chains? 8 and 10 spd.

I've always used Shinano chains in the past but their prices are getting beyond a joke.

Cheers

Why not use a KMC quick link - less hassle than a joining pin

Ii've got Shimano pins, spare links and a chain tool for both speeds in my saddle bag for on road repairs. My question is do I have to ditch these and replace or will they work to get me home with a KMC / SRAM chain.

Personly I would say ditch them.

You have no need for them.

You only need to get home if "the worst thinkable thing" happens.

For this all you need is a chain tool to remove the damaged link and join the chain. When home you can repare it properly.

Most (or a lot) modern tool sets have a chain tool in them.

And yes if you repare a chain on the road it will be shorter - but so what, it will get you home.

IME its only Shimano chains that require a new pin when you break the chain or damage it.If you don't replace the pins its a near certainty it will break in that same place pretty soon.
KMC,SRAM and Campag always seem to be fine when you re-join them with the same pin.

As Monty Dog says use the KMC quick links, so much easier for cleaning.I use them on all my chains even Campag and Shimano.

I hear what you are saying but I am still left wanting to know if you can use Shimano pins on KMC / SRAM chains.

    Can amyone help?

Why bother? If the chain snaps, either rejoin it with your chain tool or carry a spare quick link. The pin wasn't designed for this application so why risk a further chain failure?

Nobody would normaly do this so I would say you may have to be the first to try it. It may work. I see no reason why not but would never do it myself when a quick link is so much better.

    Thanks for the reponses.

I've ordered a KMC chain and a couple of spare quick links for the eight speed hack as a try out.

    Cheers

Don't bother using Shimano pins for KMC Chain, since the pin is not designed fo rthe use on KMC chains. As mentioned, it would be definitely easier and user-friendly to use KMC Missing Link as a spare to connect or re-connect the chain if needed.

    Hope it helps.

Absolutely. Haven't used pins since quick links, master links, etc. came out. Well worth
a bit extra money(a very little bit) and have never had a problem with them.
