Juicy 7 - Pad contact...backwards?

Ok, Maybe I'm getting this wrong but it's driving me crazy.

I've bled my Juicy 7's. The manual stated to turn the pad contact all the way out before doing so. I did this, bled brakes as instructed, but now when I turn the pad contact back in I have to pull the lever further to apply the brakes. Surely this is backwards!

I am following the arrow on the lever so I'm not turning it the wrong way. I would have thought that moving the pad contact in would mean closer to the disc therefore less lever movement needed.

What am I dong wrong?

I'm pretty sure that turning the dial in the direction of the "In" arrow means that the position of the lever when the pads 'bite' is further in, so closer to the bars. It doesnt move the pads closer 'in' towards the disc, in fact it has the opposite effect on the feel of the brakes.

I think that may be right ^^. I've always found the pad adjust positions to be counter intuitive. I always assumed the 'in' referred to the pads moving in towards the discs but I think it refers to the lever position being closer to the bars when the pads bite.

  • Ahhh, man, that would make sense! It doesn't when you read it in the manuel but explaining it like that helps. So, it has no bearing on the pads themselves! Just how much you have to move the lever.

    Thanks a lot!

"Pad Contact In" is not the best thing to call it then!

Correct - took me a little while to grasp this at first, not a very good name for the function. :?

And the reach adjust effectively sets the home position of the lever so it starts further or closer from the grips, but the amount of travel before the pads bite is contact point adjust.
