Farting Avid Juicy Ultimate....

Where are my stabilisers?
edited April 2009 in MTB workshop & tech
I have this er, problem..... My front brake.... farts!!

My front brake makes this kind of fart sound when I'm braking - only when I'm going at speed and trying to stop. Does it just need bleeding or is it something more sinister? It's like a high pitched rapid bubbly sound. It doesn't do it when I'm going slowly though - it must be some kind of pressure thing I suppose? The brake does stop the bike but I don't think it is working as well as the rear.

I can't see any evidence of a leak so do you think bleeding will resolve the matter? Or have I got a different problem on my hands? The noise comes from the lever/hose area not the caliper end but I can't directly place the noise because I only hear it when I'm going quickly!

Any advice?

Cheers :)

what discs? pics. it will most likely just be the noise that the brakes make.

Also do the brakes work fine?

mine do it too, as do a colleagues - one suggestion is it's to do with air passing through the holes in the rotor (sounds like a load of cobblers to me)

as long as they work don't worry

I've just had my 08 Ultimates replaced under warranty after 14 months.there's a fault on the 08 model only.It was my front that went also.It starts with wierd noises then the lever sort of sticks or returns slowly, its something to do with the pad adjuster mechanism being made of chocolate.
All Spesh dealers are aware of the failures, worth a try.
  • Well they do still work at the moment thankfully! Gave them a nice test today as I nearly fell off the side of a trail

The noise doesn't seem to come from the rotor though and it's just happening with the front brake - but it certainly sounds like air somewhere in the system.

I think they are the 08 model, I bought them from Merlin a couple of months ago. Probably my best option is to email them to ask about the warranty and if they know of the fault - before they start sticking etc

    Thanks peeps.

so it makes this noise when you are not moving?

  • Na, can't be boiling fluid, coz the noise happens as soon as I need to use the brake - it does it even when I'm going down my driveway (quite steep but short) at the start of a ride.

    I'm crap at explaining sorry!

No, only happens when I'm moving - when the bike is trying to stop. The rear brake works great - that will lock up practically as soon as it is applied, but the front, although it works, takes time to stop the bike. Put it this way, I can't do a stoppie coz the brake slow's me, not stops me quickly.

The brake engages fine by spinning the wheel and pulling the lever when I test it. The pads are close to the rotor, so they aren't too far away or anything.

I emailed Merlin so I'll see what there response is. If there is a known fault then I'll see if they can change the brake. Otherwise, I'll get a bleed kit and see how they are then I suppose!

I'll be going out on my bike later with my sister so I'll get her to assist in pin pointing the noise.
  • Update, just received email from Merlin who said to send it back to them and they'll sort it!!

So, I guess that'll solve the prob :D
