Hi all. After nearly a year of riding a pink and black apollo women's bike to work and back (two miles) i have decided to treat myself. Im looking for a bike around or under the 500 pound mark but the thing is i want to ride it xc on a weekend so im not sure what to buy. Ive seen a giant yukon fx3 for 300 that looks good (but what do i know) any help would be appreciated.

Couldnt offer much help other than I'm also new, but today orderd the yukon 3. Hope to ride at the weekends to lose a few lbs.

Unless you have somewhere very secure (such as right beside your desk) to keep the bike at work I wouldn't want to spend £500 on a commute bike - it'll disappear within the month.

Good bike at a good price though.
  • you sound like the other half. I work in a factory and the bike shed has a camera pointing at it with a security guard on the gate. So is it worth 300 pounds or is there better bikes out there for the money.

I'd go for one of last years Mongoose bikes (I did :D ) the Amasa and Otero were in the running but in the end I blew my budget and opted for a more focused off road bike as I never do more than half a km on the road. Worth a look as the spec for money is pretty good.

have a look at http://paulscycles.co.uk/products.php the offers section as if you see something you like you can use the price to beat down you LBS or just get on from there after you've tried a few out at lbs, evans , halfords etc..
But don't forget the Carrera range at Halfords you might even catch one of the many offers.
Have a look round and see what compromises you are willing to make.

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

about half way down that thred :D

after reading that advice as always i followed it up with exhautive googling. turns out the bike was judged a bit of a bargin when priced twice as much.

i was actually after a hardtail bike, however i think for parts alone on the bike it looks like a bargin at 300 quid. and if i wanted to change the frame so be it, i know what i'm like and i have to tinker with things when i get them (last night i had to flash my dvd player with customer firmware, i got bored with the subtitle colour during a film.... ocd)
