I will shortly need to replace the gear cables on one of my bikes. Has anyone tried routing the cables round the opposite side of the headtube to normal for a smoother cable run, then crossing them under the downtube?

A mechanic did that on my last frame, a Wilier Izoard, and the cables rubbed on the down tube down above the BB. I had to put them back to parallel.

I do it all my frames - short headtubes and all that - and I've never had a problem with cable rub under the downtube - must be a peculiarity with the Wilier or bikes with headtube mounted cable stops. Doing it this way, the outer cable stands clear of the headtube, so no cable rub/scuffing. Fitting a short length of Nokon or Gore outer liner protects the frame anyway.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
