I've a pair of Mavic Aksiums.

Fab wheels which have stayed true throughout some serious training over the winter.

BUT, getting tyres on and off them is a total headache.

Have just bought some folding beaded Michelins hoping it would be easier but 3 split innertubes, one skinned thumb and failure later, I'm stumped.

I'm not the only one who's tried my setup and suffered.

Anyone else got them and got a solution ?

I've got Michelin Lithion folding tyres on mine and they are relatively easy to get on and off.
They go back on just by using my thumbs :o:o

    Maybe it's your technique?

First set of tyres were Rubinos with wire bead - very, very difficult to get on or off, and others had a go too !

    New tyres are Michelin Krylions.

Did the tyres ease up a little and get easier over time ?

I have dura ace wheels which like yours have amazed me by staying completely true for the last year plus. But man are they bu**ers when it comes to putting on Michelin tyres. Not sure if your rims share a slightly strange profile but I had exactly the same problem with Krylions as you have described. Tail between legs I ended up taking the wheels to my lbs and they fitted them - they also admitted to having screwed up three tubes in the process!!

I now have Pro Race 3's which I didn't even bother to try and fit.

My nightmare scenario is going on a decent ride and getting a puncture - something I haven't suffered with either tyre.

My old mavic open pro rims threw the odd spoke from time to time, I don't know if they were ever perfectly true, but changing a tyre was a piece of... I'm getting quite nostalgic about that aspect of their character!!

I have a pair of Specialized Mondo tyres, and they are pretty tough to get on and off my Ultegra wheelset... Hence I ALWAYS take tyre levers :D

I found the Krylions hard to get on Aksiums, I know you are not supposed to but I end up using a tyre lever at the last bit.

The Open Pro's are super easy to get off and quite easy to get on.

I'm going to try and return them know after those last few comments.

They appealed because of their puncture resistance.

Any of those Aksium owners recommend an easy fitting tyre with good puncture resistance ?

    Thanks.

I've got Conti Ultra Race and GP 4000 on my Aksiums and no problems getting either on or off. I do need to use levers though.

I had the same problem initially with Michelin Pro 3 and Krylions. As time went by they became a bit more supple and easier to put on.

I was taking the rear tyre on/off every week to put a turbo trainer tyre on...wish I had just bought another wheel specifically for the turbo!!

Aksiums are alright.... I can get most new tyres on with my thumbs... once they're used a bit you don't even need tyre levers to get them off.

Campagnolo rims are a different story!
  • bontrager race lites went on so easily was worried i'd bought 26'' askiums!!
