I can't think of anything I'd bother doing to the shifters- although I believe it is possible: my skankhole LBS did something to my rear shifter a few years ago when they gave me a 7-speed cassette when they didn't have an 8-speed one in; they did something that effectively turned my 8-speed shifter into a 7-speed one (cheers guys!). Actually, I can't remeber what I did to fix it when I eventually got a new 8-speed cassette, but anyway...
You might want to adjust the front mech so it doesn't travel far enough to try and put the chain up on the bashring- just fiddle with the screws a bit.
That and just be careful not to try and change into a gear you no longer have...

I have not changed my mech at all but when i come to think of it my mech wasnt set up right, but am not too sure about that, and mine is always on the second ring.

e13's only work with 2 rings I think
So the Blackspire fits ONTO the third ring, while e-thirteen firs INSTEAD of the 3rd ring? Do you need to modify the shifters at all?
