Does it REALLY matter??

Stick with Shimano, INTERCHANGEABILITY IS THE THING
Appart from this being absolute rubbish, I've 4 shimano equipped bikes (2 road, 2 mtb) and I can't hardly change a single bit from one to the other. I certainly couldn't just swap wheels in and out.
So ignore all the twaddle about interchangeability and just get what the heck you like.
(NB: i forgot in my post above the Centaur is now 11 speed I think, so 8 speed Sora won't work with it).0 -
Wrong there Eh, Centaur is still 10 speed.0

Oh so if thats the case and the OP has 8 speed Sora, then for interchangeability Centaur maybe the better answer. The Shimano 8 speed block and rear mech will work fine with Campag 10 speed ergos. Also the shifting levers are more similar with Sora also having a downshift thumb button.
You need to think of Sora as a bit of a subset within the Shimano range because it doesn't have shifters like the rest of the range and is continually one speed behind. Although as a cheapo groupset its great, my shifters and chainset have done over 10,000 miles.0 -
Get the Centaur carbon because...
1 ) You've not had Campag before. If you're serious about cycling you've got to have it on at least one bike, once. Why not this one?
2 ) The current Ultegra group is on the way out. Centaur is new for this year. Shimano have already released details of the new Ultegra. It'll be out before the end of this year. Why pay full price for something that'll be heavily discounted by the end of this season?
3 ) They both do the job fine, but Centaur looks better because it's fresh / new / a little different.
4 ) Be honest, you're buying a new bike just because you want one, aren't you? Most of us do. It's all about the bike 'bling'. Something shiny and new. The Centaur group is shinier and newer.
5 ) That 'ice grey' finish on the Ultegra looks oh-so-cool in the bike shop, but scratch it (and you will, eventually) and the dull alloy from underneath will stand out, annoy you and eventually this annoyance will slow you down on your rides. It's all to do with sports psychology. OK, so the last bit's not true, but the thing about the anodising is. If you scratch the Centaur's carbon, you probably won't even notice, and even if you do, you can touch it up with some of your wife's clear nail varnish.
6 ) Come to think of it, 'ice grey' finish? Ice grey? Grey ice? Grey ice is slush in my book. Who wants a slush coloured groupset?
7 ) Forget about the compatibility debate. You're shelling out for a great new bike, you don't want to put a cheapo wheel from your training bike in it anyway. Plus, as proved above, it's not really compatible either way (even if paired with the Centaur, the ten-speed chain still won't be perfect).
8 ) New Ribble carbon frame. New carbon bits. Goes together well, doesn't it?
I could probably come up with more, but as you can see, they're getting a bit desperate.
Oh, and for the sake of balance I'm not really in either the Shimano or Campagnolo camp. I've two bikes with each on. The bike I'm currently putting together will have SRAM Force.
Seriously, you're looking at two high-end groupsets, both designed to do exactly the same job - there's no such thing as a 'wrong' choice. Let your heart rule your head and get whatever takes your fancy.
Good luck with the choice...0 -
Core blimey that got a bit headed. I've made up my mind , and am happy. As mentioned many times theres no wrong or right answer anyway. Thanks for everyones comments. I WILL NOT WOBBLE, and stick to my decision! I'll post a photo of the new RIBBLE with ........... ????? ................... CENTAUR when it turns up.
Shame theres a 21 day wait at the mo."I spend my petrol money on Bikes, Beer, Pizza, and Donuts "

That's 1000 quid for a Wilier sticker!!
Wilier were none too pleased and the thread was deleted however it was after several happy owners received their frames.
The guy who sorted it now does his own frames from the factory and badges them as Neo Exile
Or as someone I know pointed out. You can get a Deda carbon frame produced in Italy for £700 or a Colnago CLX, manufactured in Taiwan for £2100 :?:M.Rushton0 -
Zedders, look forward to seeing it!0
