Topeak Presta Valve Extender

I was on my first mountain bike ride at the weekend (yay go me!).

During the ride, one of my companions had a flat tyre. No apparent damage to the tyre and when pumped up it seemed to keep its pressure. Anyhow, whilst testing the tube the nut / valve part got broken off and disappeared. No big problems, change tube and carry on.

Back at work I saw that someone in the office had bought a Topeak Presta Valve Extender. My question is this. Would one of these be able to fix the problem we had and therefore be worth carrying around in the toolkit? Has anyone ever tried a trail repair like this before?

Thanks

Tiny

They can be useful for deep-rim wheels but the plunger inside the extender makes it difficult to tighten the presta valve's nut securely. They're not intended to be used while the bike is moving.
