Im wanting to know what i need to do to change my mtb from a full 27 speed down to 9 speed, e.g what new parts do i get - new crank, new ring, which size? I use my bike for a bit of everything and am only changing the set up because of a serious accident which has effected my left hand. I've moved both brakes and shifters to the right on my bars but i'm having to do too much with one hand. Any help or tips would be a great help.

presuming the crank has removable rings take off what you dont want and fit some chain retention device and a cog size of your choice. oh and shorten the chain.

    BUT.

i have a few ideas to throw at you. keeping to the right side. fit a twist grip revesrd to work the front mech?

but what i think would be the best is a rolhoff rear hub.

  • If going for just one ring, I think you'd probably go for the middle one (34t ish) as that's inbetween your granny ring (which I don't use barely at all) or the large one which may be a bit much to use on its own. I think you can probably get away with keeping your current setup of crank, removing the 2 rings, maybe adding a bashring to protect yourself a bit if needed.

It must be really hard to use brakes etc with just one free hand though?

  • I use two right hand SLX brakes slightly apart, i can use each individually or i can stretch my fingers to pull both together, its taking abit of practice but im getting there.
I had'nt thought about the Rohloff hub, looks good but abit pricey!
Think i'll go for the one ring option with a bashring. Many thanks.
