Pikes making odd noise

They just started making an odd noise over the weekend, it sounds like a spring creak or possibly sticking when they rebound from using the travel. Small hits and compression seems to be ok it's just the bigger stuff. Plus there is now a little bit of oil on one stanchion so it's possible the seals are not as good as they once were.

Due to go to Wales bank holiday weekend reckon they will be ok until I return so I can send them off for a service?

  • If you look on this site, there's a very good video of the week where the boss of TF tuned talks about suspension, front and rear. He compresses a front fork which makes a noise that he says is normal. It may be worth looking at that to see if your fork is making a comparable 'normal' noise. If so happy days. If not, get it in for a service unless you're a DIY grease monkey!

Probably just the oil going through the damper valves. Squelching kinda noise?

It makes a squelching noise when it compresses but the rebound or return noise is more like a repeated tapping or odd spring noise.

I think I remember seeing that video i'll have to have a look and see if I can find it.

What model Pikes? Dual Air by any chance? If so, make sure that the negative spring has a higher or equal pressure to the positive (not by much, 5psi or so should be enough).

If they are Dual AIrs, chances are if the pressure in the negative spring isn't high enough they'll be topping out as they extend, which is what your clunking noise is.

and if they are coil then it could just be the coil moving and tapping the legs. more so if the rubber sleeve has moved.

Probably should have said that they were the 2008 426's, so they're a coil fork. They're going in for a warranty service as soon as I return from a long weekend trip to Wales, so hopefully all the small niggles with them will stop.

It does sound like the coil tapping the leg or possibly sticking to the leg on the rebound, they still seem to work ok, just sound pretty nasty.

well saying that they are 426 would not have helped as they come in 3 versions. Coil U turn/ Air U turn and dual air.

I thought the 2008 426's were coil u-turn only, while the 454 were either coil u-turn or dual air. MIne are def the coil u-turn though.

Is this the same with Revs? 409 DA U-Turn?

all rockshox i have used make a squelching noise on rebound but silent on compression. if they were not making a squealching noise on rebound before then you must have not had any rebound dialed in.
