Hi Guys,
Anyone got any experience with Single Speed Builds?
I am planning on building up my Specialized Rock hopper Pro frame. I need wheels and chainset and brakes. Planning on running disk.
I was hoping somebody knew of a few compatible bits?
These are some of my planned purchases.
Truvativ Isoflow Single Speed Chainset
Truvativ Powerspline BB
68 x 118mm
NS Bikes Coaster Singlespeed MKII Rear Wheel (chainreaction cycles)
Avid Juicy 3 2009
Still need a front wheel and cant decide whether or not to fit rigid forks rather than the Reba Rock Shox I already have.
I am looking for any constructive input guys and if anyone has some tips pleasse feel free to let me know.
Regards,

What do you want it for?
I'd consider a single speed conversion of a standard cassette hub rather than a ss specific one, although the dmr revolver SS QR hub is fairly nice, you get a much better choice with free-hub hubs.
For the cranks, buy the slx double chainset and lose the inner ring, it'll work fine like that, and is a far nicer crankset.
Either sell the rebas to me, or more seriously, keep them. They're good forks and if you're going off road then you'll probably end up wanting them.
For brakes, try the hayes strokers rather than the avids much nicer feel IMHO0 -
appreciate the input.
I am getting a the Specialized Stumpy so I decided to sell my langster and put this Rockhopper on the Road! But I want to use it in the forest from time to time. And that would be a matter of changing chain rings?
So I will be using it for a little of everything really.0 -
So what you are saying is rather use a normal rear wheel and get a conversion kit?0

If you do get a standard rear wheel, make sure the cog you buy has a fat bottom.
Chainset doesn't really matter that much, I've got one with an LX HT2, one with a deore sq taperVisit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.
Who are you calling inbred?0 -
Not sure I follow, what do you mean fat bottom? Do you mean it needs to be 1/8?0

not true.. get a hub with a steel freehub body and you can use any singlespeed rear cog.
alloy freehub bodies require a cog with a thicker base, as the thin cogs can eat into them.
gusset make the "normal" and "thicker" SS rear cogs.0 -

That's not always true. I've ripped through a deore hub with a thin one.Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.

I am looking at getting these wheels, so after reading the comments it looks as though I will need a thicker cog base?

As you're paying £125 for the wheels, the added £10 or so for a thicker cog would be advisable and not too much extra. All mine are from Surly.Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.
