Conundrum…………….
Shimano would have us believe that the new 7900 DA isn’t compatible with some elements of 7800 DA.
I.E. The 7900 STI’s aren’t compatible with the 7800 calipers.
CN/BR Quote:
“Shimano says the revised cable pull ratios on 7900 essentially make backwards-compatibility with 7800 brake calipers and front derailleurs a no-no. Sadly, we’ll have to mostly agree.
Mixing brake components yields either a too-firm lever with reduced power (7900 levers with 7800 calipers) or a somewhat spongy lever with grabby response. In either case, the distinction is decidedly subtle but still noticeable nonetheless and definitely doesn’t come close to matching the performance of a properly matched 7900 set. ”
Now then, looking at the pics of Cav winning MSR, Haussler on his right has 7900 STI’s with 7800 calipers…………This seems strange really, a pro accepting less performance from his brake set up. That’s not the first time I’ve seen this either, there was a pic in CW a couple of weeks ago with the same set up. Maybe Shimano are just trying to prise more money out of us?
Also couldn’t see the gear cables on Haussler’s bike that are clear on Cav’s bike.

if it's marginal then it's not going to make a massive difference, especially on a flatish stage.
I've run dual pivots with V brake levers before now, which have the same issues as you describe (levers pull too much cable thus brake power is down and levers are fiirm) but in reality it's not that bad. As big a difference as running old pads or dirty rims basically.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0
