Hi people, i've been unable to decide on buying a lapierre zesty or an orange five, if anyone can give some advice it would be a great help. The models i'm looking at are the 514 and five pro, both the same price but i also like the 314 zesty but it hasn't got the bolt through.

    Test ride them.

The lapierres are generally overpriced due to the euro, and the oranges due to being an orange. IMHO the lapierre looks a hell of a lot better...

Ive ridden lots of bikes over the years , all of them what you would consider to be good bikes at the time and the Zesty which I have right now is the best I have ever had.

Superb handling and scorching top look at :D

Im in the the same dilemma. Was pretty much set on a 5 pro with a few upgrades which totalled out at around £2800. Then was having a browse as you do and saw the review of the Zesty 314. Looked into it a bit further and fallen for the Spicy 516. Now im just a confused mess.

read a review the the other day. orange better downhill and zesty better uphill, but doubt there is much in it.

give them both a good hard thrashing  to get the best out of them.

Sure that wasn't the Spicy and the Alpine AM in MBR?

...but it's French where the Orange is British.

The British bike will make you feel great about being last up the hill (at least you tried, which is more imprtant than winning), whereas the French one will cause you give up half way and complain about how it isn't fair how steep the hill is.

The British bike will make you more attractive to the opposite sex and increase your beer capacity and ability to fight with lamp-posts. The French one smells of garlic and has a sneaking respect for the Germans.

    ah, could of been.

lapierre is better anyways, mine doesn't smell of garlic!! and it doesn't look like a piece of scaffold like the orange.

i looked at the 5 just thought it looked shite imo. expect it rides nice though

Two good bikes, MBR done a test on these two and two others last year
    Mag test March 2008

In the verdict section of the mag it says
    Lapierre Zesty
With its slack head angle, long wheelbase and plush susspension, the lapierre Zesty 514
is easily the most (all round bike) on test and feels simiar to a Specailized Enduro SL
from the get-go it screams high speed, rough terrain with a good measure of gravity pull.
However, thats not to say its a DH rig, as the Zesty is light enough to be pedialled up the steepest assecnts, even it is not as swift as some of the others here.
If you feel over terrained or under skilled, you'll love the invincibility that the Zesty oozes
However some riders found the Isolated feel of the Zesty robbed them of the sensation
of speed on the average uk trails

    Zesty scored a 9

    Orange 5 Proo
At face value the Orange 5 isn't as stylish as some of the other bikes on test, but once you've ridden it you'll never look at it in the same light again.
Handling, stiffnes, balance, geometry and realiability don't come better than on the
Orange 5, and together they make for an insirational ride bike. Yes, the suspension
is simple, but it is also very effective so don't knock it until you've actually tried it.
As a package the Orange 5 Pro can be ridden well beyond its design remit.
So get yourself a wider bar and be prepared to go eye wateringly fast.

    Orange 5 Pro scored 10

Orange have redesigned the 5 for this year by narrowing the downtube
and adding a gusset to make the main frame even stronger and done more work
    to the Rear arm too.
One thing to look out for is the new relaxed head angle by 1 degree, how this compares
to the 08 frame I dont know.

Best thing is to try and see what one works for you.

Been looking into this a bit more. For my Orange build spec the equivelant Zesty would be the 714. Its £600 more than my planned build, give or take the xtr rear derailleur and chain set. Also Zesty review in WMB comments on long top tube, on the 46cm frame. the 18" 5 frame top tube is 2mm longer than the Zesty. I know other factors effect the overall feel, stem, bars etc. Has anyone had this long at the top feel with the Orange? Im 6ft with a 33" inside leg and found the 18" five i tested pretty perfect. Short enough feel to be flickable, but long enough when you needed it to be to keep it stable and planted. Still the Orange for me.
  • I'm 5'11" and have an 18" Orange with 90mm stem. I did roll the bars back as I felt the reach was a little long and I was over the front wheel a bit too much. Saying that though, the 09 Orange I saw in a shop recently had a 70mm stem so wouldn't be an issue now.

considered a giant trance x1 or x0? or even a ktm lycan?

out of those two i think the orange is better vfm, lapierre seems overpriced and under specced for a £2500 bike

    zesty 514 is £2300. whats a pro 5 £2100 min?

would say say the specs are pretty similar.

There are loads of bikes at this price - and to be honest, none of them or disasters! Just varying takes on geometry and set up, ehcih goes back to my first post - test them.

Orange 5 is a single pivot, Zesty has a virtual pivot point in a different location. This will feel different!
