Explain bash rings to me.

I'm off to the Alps for some downhill trailriding in July.

I'm currently running a hone 3 ring up front.

What size bash ring do I need for this?

what size is your biggest ring?

From what I understand, you need a bash a bit bigger than your biggest ring to ensure it protects the chainring and chain.

ie, I have a 36T chainring, and want a 36-40T bash

Whilst you can get bash guards for triple setups, you'll be better off fitting double+bash as there are more options. Say fit a 36 or 38 middle ring and a slightly larger granny with a bashguard.

A 32T bashring will protect up to a 32T middle ring.
A 36T bashring will protect up to a 36T middle ring.
A 40T bashring will protect up to a 40T middle ring.
etc.

On my Bighit the FSA 36T bashring is still slightly bigger than the 38T chainring and as such it works fine as part of the chainguide. It does not offer as much protection from 'bashes' that are not square on but from the non drive side though.

If you continue to use the 32T middle ring then a 36T bashring would work fine and give you the option to change up to a 36T middle ring later if you want.

Have you considered using a lower roller guide with the double and bash set up?

2. Fit a 34T or 36T middle ring.

I'd keep your 'big ring' and pretend it's a bash guard. You may loose a few teeth off it, but so what? You'll save even more money!

Just a quick question. Is a 36T bashring bigger than a 36T chainring? Or would you need to pick a 38-40T bashring to protect it?

A 36T bashring will protect a 36T chainring.

You could get a size up in case you decide to go for a bigger chain ring in the future but if you don't you'll have lost a few mm clearence for no reason.
