Advice on 'sticking' SLX shifters...

Probably gonna make a fool of myself but went out the other day in heavy rain conditions and, on the way back, my SLX shifters started sticking. Basically, the lower triggers don't 'return'; while the gears change ok, I have to 'manually' pull the lower trigger back each time. And BOTH shifters are sticking, so must have been the mud/weather...
Do you think this is this a problem with the shifters (i.e. do I need to open them up and lube them)? Or could it the cables? I'm not that impressed as I've given everything a pretty good clean but still sticking. Bought the bike just before xmas so maybe worth taking back to get them to check?
Cheers,
Pete

ALways start with the cables. 99% of shifter problems are poor cables or poor set up.0
