replacing a nexus hub with a cassette?

Hi,

I've got a spcialized globe which uses the shimano hexus hub gear. I'm finding that the hub is getting harder and harder to service, and was wondering if it's possible to replace the wheel with a normal cassette hub and rear mech? Unfortunately there is no rear mech dropout or any brazons where one can be fitted.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers,

    Hi smelly
I had the same trouble with a Globe Nexus,i.e. gears slipping and crunching and needing constant adjustment.
I replaced the Nexus with a cassette hub and Campag Veloce rear mech. I made a gear hanger from some 4mm aluminium plate,a small bolt and the wheel skewer hold it in place, then drilled through the chainstay to bolt on a cable stop for the rear mech. The single chainring was replaced with a double and Veloce front mech.
Flat bars were replaced with drops and Veloce shifters.I had to drill and tap the down tube for the cable stops.A cable guide was bolted to the bottom bracket shell.V brakes were replaced with cantilevers.
After all that only the frame, seat post and saddle remain from the original bike.
I fitted mudguards and use this as my winter bike.Hope this helps.
  • Croggy,

Thank you for the reply. It sounds that you probably have more ability with a power tool than me. I'm assuming that there is no rear dropout attachment that one can buy to attach the rear mech to?

You can buy rear mechs with a hanger attached but they tend to be low spec like this:

    or this:
