Well Im ransforming a bike from standard mtb to drop bar, Ive bot avid bb7 mechanical disks, and I want to run them off sti style road brake / shifter levers; question is can I use campagnolo 9speed levers with the shimano xt 9 speed rear derailleur or do I have to use shimano sti levers, 105 or tiagra and so on? Ive been offered some campag ones so would be good if they worked. Anyone know, or done it?

sell them and get the bb7 ROAD callipers.
the X9 rear mech is not compatible with any road shifter.
So change it for a shimano MTB one and you will be fine with shimano right hand gear changer.
the right hand one coulb be ok as ong as you only have two rings.
My i ask why you are making life hard for yourself?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Its not x9, its xt 9speed. (shimano). I just want to know if campag road shifters work the same as shimano road shifters.making it all up as i go along0

No the Campag Ergo leavers will not work with any SRAM or Shimano rear mech. They only work with the correct standard Campag standard mech. There are a few variants of the Campag standard so you have to get the correct one. Also you have to use the correct cassette as well as Campag cassettes use a different spacing. Also road front mechs pull a diferent amount of cable so you have to use a road front mech and road chainset if you wish to use Ergo leavers.0

Have a look there for "monstercross" plenty of people there running drop bar MTB's
But you do need the compatibility- Shimano probably the easiest to work with.0 -

me missing the "t" as ratty says the easiest mix is to keep shimano."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks everyone, I will stick to shimano. You asked why, Nick; Well I like drop bars, lots of options, and When I first got into mtb's I remember seeing John Tomac on his bike and being amazed it had drop bars, but mostly Im just bored!making it all up as i go along0
