I'm looking for a new hardtail in the £250 to £300 range & need some advice.

I'm thinking of either a Saracen Mantra 2 2008 at £300 or a Haro Escape 2008 at £250. Both have £100 off deals which is steering me towards them.

Any opinions or other suggestions?

I know the budget is tight but times are hard.

Cheers Andy

What kind of riding will you be doing?

Carrera Vulcans would be worth looking at at halfords.

Its mainly for intermediate trails, nothing too challenging.

Forget the Mantra then, far too heavy. Haro looks a bit overkill too.

Have a read of the What Hardtail guide for options. As above, Vulcan is very good for the money.

OK so the Mantra & Haro look out & the Vulcan looks good.

The only problem is Halfords! I hate giving money to the big conglomerates, who are killing all the indipendant dealers, so that would be my last resort.

From the What Hardtail guide, what are the Giant Boulder Disc & the Felt Q220 like?

Lol, if anything Halfords are encouraging more people to go to the LBS to get the bikes fixed ;-)

Anyhow is a great bike with a decent fork. Boulder is OK, Felt is poor.

Noble sentiments but you need to be getting the best spec for the money you can in this price range. If you can find a Boulder with a decent spec then it'd be worth looking at. But as always you could do with sitting on them before you buy otherwise you're really taking a wild leap in the dark. The gamble can pay off though, it did for me when I picked up a Giant Boulder Trail disc for £195, but I feel I dropped really lucky and wouldn't take the chance again. A Vulcan you can at least go and sit on.

That said, this deal is floating around at the moment: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=25443

That BeOne is the best value sub 300 quid bike I have ever seen. Geometry looks perfectly reasonable too, and the frames are good quality. Nice weight as well - in fact lighter than the Orange P7s in this months MBR lol.

But as mentioned, trying out is problematic.

If those measurements on the CRC chart are correct and the listed 21" frame is the 20.5" measurement listed then It's more or less identical (+/- 1cm) to my 21" Boulder Trail wheel base, top tube, seat tube and I'm 6' / 33cm leg.

Classsic XC geo really - maybe a bit short in the top tube for a given size, but many like that.
