Loose spoke, nothing to tighten up.
Hi,
Had a new rear hub and new spokes fitted last week by lbs. Everything ok, I`ve been checking after each ride and made a few tighten ups as required.
Came back off a longish ride today and when I checked to spokes one of them has come loose but the nut on the end that normally tightens up is missing!
I need to use the bike for work tomorrow early a.m but don`t know
a) if it safe to ride with it as it is, or is the spoke likely to go anywhere? i.e into the tube.
b) should I cut it right out, ride with one missing and go back to the lbs tomorrow afternoon to get it replaced?
Commute is a 20 mile round trip.
Any advice greatly received. Cheers.

I would say it,s very poor wheelbuilding for a start. How does a spoke nipple work itself loose in such a short space of time.If it were my wheel i would take it back and as for a good explaination, you deserve one. As for riding the bike in it,s present state, no i would not. The wheel sounds like it,s a very poor build quality. If you can get your money back and go somewhere else then do it.Just as a matter of interest where did you get the wheel built.

What has me concerned is "made a few tighten ups as required". Have you ever worked on wheels before? Did you use "proper" tools in this tightening(spoke wrench)? How much did you tighten? Not trying to say you didn't do a good job but wheels can be tricky
and simply tightening things up is only part of the picture to a well built wheel. From what you've said it sounds like a bad build or a spoke just let go at the nipple but is it possible
that you did something wrong? Like I said, I don't mean to say that you don't know what you're doing but, do you?

Dennis,
used a Park tool spoke key. The wheel is running true.
Like I said the lbs replaced the hub and rebuilt the wheel. Had no problems until today. The bike has done about 250 miles since being worked on.
No, I`m not a wheel builder, but I thought checking spoke tightness was routine maintenance.Somethings gotta go wrong, `cause I`m felling way too damn good - Nickelback.0 -
Must admit i dont play with the spokes unless I need to true a wheel. How many spokes have you got ? If its 32 spokes you'd probably be OK to ride it.
I wonder if you've loosened off the nipple and its lost inside the rim somewhere ?0 -
Cougie,
without going out in the rain to check, I think it`s 32. Alex DA22 rim on an SCR2.Somethings gotta go wrong, `cause I`m felling way too damn good - Nickelback.0 -

If you can buy a book on wheel building and get into reading it. It will give you a better
idea of how things go together and why. Tightening spokes is IMHO not really a routine
maintenance thing. When the wheel is out of whack is the time to do this. It doesn't mean you need to constantly tighten spokes. If your wheel needs constant attention to keep it true or round or centered or dished right then there is something wrong with the way
it was built or you're just beating the sh*t out of it(so to speak). Most well built wheels
need a "BIT" of truing "OCCASIONALLY", not daily. And continued tightening(without
loosening opposing spokes) will eventually lead to some sort of rim and or spoke failure.

Happened to me the other day 25 miles from home.
Basically, the nipple had got so loose, it had fallen into the rim. It's impossible to get out unless you take the tyre, inner-tube and rim tape off. Unfortunately for me, I had no spare rim tape and got 3 punctures on the way home. :?0 -
Cougie,
spokes, hub (Tiagra) and rebuild, just under £50. Does this make a difference then?
Made the ride into work this morning o.k. and will go back to lbs this afternoon.

Not particularly, I was just curious. I have the same bike and wheels. I had to replace my front hub but I went for a whole new wheel instead. Was told that the rim isn't anything special and the cost of a new hub plus labour was nearly enough to buy a new wheel.
For your info, you can buy a new handbuilt rear wheel for 76 quid with tiagra hub and open pro rim. http://www.parker-international.co.uk/9853/Hand-Built-Mavic-Open-Pro-Rear-Wheel.html0
