I have a trek 6500 with slr frame(am told this is light and good and seems it) which is about 5 years oldish. I am very happy with it but wheel rims are just about worn out and now am living in real hilly area and using bike more off road so am noticing brakes aren't great.
I am light and small - 5'3'' and 9.5 stone - should i replace wheels and get better v brakes (some fairly rubbishy promax stuff on now i think) or upgrade to disc brakes and corresponding wheels? Or would money be better spent on fork- forget what is on now but is original and prob quite basic. am bit obsessed about keeping weight down so happy to buy decent quality.
Know upgrading is expensive and not as good value as new bike but frame seems good and don't like throwing stuff away.Just noticing deficiencies now as using bike lots more on severer terrain.
advice appreciated and what is best value/cheapest decent stuff...
cheers

i would save and do the whole lot in one go.
Fork/discs and wheels."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Is the frame even disc compatable?
I demand pics!!!!!0 -
Pics would be good.
have to upweight all these upgrades against a new bike. Frame is good, but a new 800 quid bike the frame probably better,0 -
You are probably looking at spending a minimum of £100 for wheels,£100 for brakes, and £200 for forks,if you decide to upgrade.
First I would say, weigh up what you could get for that £400 investment plus add the resale value of your existing bike,to give you say £500 in total and have a look at something like these examples, which would be in that budget:

Both very nice bikes for less than £500,with excellent frames, reasonable kit and will handle further upgrading,as and when parts wear or you have more money.2006 Giant XTC

Thanks for advice - will stick some pics on soon.
would still rather keep original frame(it is disc compatible as i remember) in same way i still drive 25year old citroen - would either of those two bikes recommended have superior quality frame or components (as opposed to newer ones)?0
