Im looking at getting a boot mounted carrier so i can take my bike away on holiday, now they all seem to be held in place on the car with straps - call me untrusting but whats to stop someone coming along when im parked up at a service station and cutting the straps and doing a runner with my bike ?

Has anyone had any bad exeriences like this ?

Check out the clip-on boot mounted racks from THULE. They actually clamp onto the bootlid in such a way that you can still open the boot for access but cannot remove the rack itself without first opening the boot.

  • Do what I do, stay in the car and keep an eye on your bike, and send the Mrs in to the services for take away tea and bacon butties. If you need the bog, leave her in the car. Simples!

Also, a long steel cable and a good padlock- fasten through a part of the chassis or the towing eye- wont stop a real determined thief, but will stop the opportunist ones.
