Sigma Rox 9.0
Hi,
I'm new to this forum, but not to cycling. I like the look of this site as there is a whole heap of useful contributions and comment from people passionate about bikes and cycling.
I just got myself a Sigma Rox 9.0 bike computer. On the face of it it appears to be a really nice piece of kit and has all that I need being the only bike computer I can find that has everything on it. Quite often I found one, thinking to myself this is the one, but it didn't have something simple and essential such as cadence or HRM. I was looking for one that could also go straight from bike to wrist for running mode but this seems just a dream at the moment as there doesn't seem to be a computer on the market yet that combines all the essentail cycling and running data.
Anyway the Rox 9.0 seems crammed with essential features, my only concern being how easy it is to use in reality whilst out on the bike riding. It does seem rather complicated. I have read the manual twice already but it is easy to get lost in the menus and sub menus. Perhaps I should connect the HRM as I read and try to understand it?
I have yet to fit it as I am waiting for the weather to clear up first. I don't want to get it covered in salt and crud.
Does anyone have one of these and how easy have they found it to use? Have they found it to be reliable and fairly accurate? Any experiences, advice or tips greatly appreciated.

Have had one of these a couple of months and couldn't be happier. I think it is the best computer on the market at the moment. Excellent functionality, build quality, design and PC software. In addition, the user-changeable batteries last for one year or more at a time. I don't want to have to plug a bike computer into the mains every time I've been on a ride! More bad news for the environment if we all start doing that.
My advice is to get the settings for you and your bike sorted on the unit. Then throw away the instruction manual and play with the unit on the bike. It is intuitive once you practice a bit. Once your riding, go into Favourites A or B and toggle what the display shows to your personal preferences.
Get used to the role of the buttons on top and bottom as in essence they do the same thing on every screen. Once you get this navigation the rest is gravy. The manual is actually of a very high-standard if you want the finer details of each and every process but in the same token it is overwhelming. Personally I just got bored with it.
It is important to understand the relationships between 'Rides' and 'Logs'. The computer starts/stops 'Rides' automatically on the bike. The user starts/stops the detailed logging as and when he/she chooses. Experiment with both then upload the data to your PC and play around with that.
Hope this helps.0 -
Thanks Muzak for the advice. You're not wrong the range of functions is overwhelming but you are right that it seems to be the best computer purely for functions and PC software currently on the market. I will persevere, like anything new and unfamiliar, it takes time to get used to it.

I picked up one of these over in Germany last summer. All the features work fine except the HRM with me? The computer just wouldn't pick up the heart transmitter? I was soaking it in water still nothing. The worst thing is I got on to the Sigma website went to their customer care bit and posted a question on the HRM and any tips? After not hearing anything and posting the question again still nothing?? So I emailed them last week to quirey my concerns that I had not heard anything from ther customer care department?
And I'm still waiting for a reply. Makes me laugh when I go on their customer care page and read this................
We are still here for you after you have made your purchase. Good service functions quickly and simply. Just contact us!
So if you've got any questions don't hold you breath. Or may be its just me?
If anybody is having trouble with their HRM try some Electrode gel it is better than wetting the strap with just water, But mine is still intermittent??0 -
I also just bought the rox 9.0, and i'm very happy with it.
shows everything i want , and easy to use , love it !!
I also had the same heartrate issues as describebd by you DavMartinR
What i did and worked :
Put the heartrate belt on my chest (with just water)
walked to the bike ,then i took the sigma out of the bike holder , i put it back in after a minute , it sort of resetted itself.
after that i got a signal , and never lost it after that.
Hope it works....
Let me know if it helped..... 8)

If you want a computer wich you can use for running.
Then go to a polar dealer and buy a polar, they have 'watches' wich you can use for running AND mount on your bike.0 -
I have mine sitting in it's box, waiting to be put on the new bike when it arrives. It looks like a splendid piece of kit.
If anyone is thinking about buying one but is put off by price, I got mine from here... arrived in 3 days, very impressed, even if there were no free Haribo in the box.

On all my HRM's I find that lick is better than water.
Mmmmmmm, salty....0 -
I just got one a few days ago. I was looking for a computer that would give me heart rate, cadence, and incline. I didn't really care for GPS, as I usually know where I am going and I have heard too many bad reviews (online and from friends) about the Garmin units. I was considering a few Polar models, but what turned me off from those was the need to buy all the separate components (e.g. cadence sensor), and the lack of being able to change the battery myself. I went with the Rox 9 because it had the features I wanted, all the necessary components in one box, and was definitely cheaper than the Polars.
Learning to set up the options and actually using the gadget hasn't been as difficult as some people have said in other reviews I've seen. It took a few days of going back and forth between just messing around with the unit and going back to the manual. There are two presets ("Favourites"), which allow you to customize with up to 10 additional features (speed, cadence, heart rate, time, and I forget the last - are always available, so that's 15 features) you can select on the fly. The ones you leave out are still actively recording for analyzing in the log when you import it into the computer, though. You just can't toggle through to see them while on the bike as far as I know.
I've only done one ride so far with it, and all the readings seemed accurate so far (I used a route I've done numerous times before to get a feel for the accuracy). No problems with the HRM to note (I used some good 'ole saliva). It keeps beeping at me for whatever reason, so I will have to learn what triggers alerts and tweak that (or turn it off). Also, I've noticed that in the data center my speed was not accurate (28 mph average - i WISH!). On the bike it was accurate though. I'm going to do some research on that and maybe contact Sigma.
Overall I am very pleased with the Rox.0 -
Got the rox 9.0 off some guy on ebay - didnt send the speed sensor and have ordered one from a store in Germany so I have not been able to to get it on my new bike. :x In the meantime have been figuring out how to use it however I cannot get the HRM function to work. I have done new baterries and allsorts but the device does not seen to detect the transmitter. I will try what "the damn hooligan" suggests but any help will be much appreciated0
-
The HRM will not work as a stand alone. You need to hook it up to the bike before it will pick up the HRM. Not sure if you could fool it by sticking the computer in the holder and then getting a reading?
I still have not heard anything from Sigma since I emailed them 3 weeks ago?? But my HRM seems to be working better now the more I get out on the bike.
There is also a second bike kit you can get from this germany shop mentioned above

Which is good. Just need to put the wheel size into the computer and switch the speed sensor to second bike and away to go.0 -
I have bought a Rox 9 for my new Bianchi. Works fine but I wanted to check and calibrate the speed etc. When you eneter settings you can input wheel size (pre-set is 2155mm) - this may seem like a dumb question, but how do I know what my wheel size is?
I have Shimano WH-R500 wheels and Continental ultra Sport 23X622 tires.
Thanks0 -
I fitted my Rox 9.0 to the bike last night. Haven't ridden with it yet.
At the moment I'm using the elastic loopy things that came in the box rather than cable ties to secure all but the pedal magnet. The computer seems well secured, but I'm not so sure about the sensors.
Has anyone used the elastic bands supplied (can't remember what they are supposed to be called) - and if so, have the sensors stayed in place...?0 -
I used cable ties and the elastic bands and it works better with both0
-
Me again...
Used the Rox for the first time today on a quick test run. I'd entered the tyre diameter as 2133 - as per the manual. The tyres are Continental Ultra Sports - 23-622's.
On returning home, the unit read 9.03km. My Garmin - mounted on the handlebars - read 8.68km. I was very careful to start both together - the GPS had been on for some time so should have attained a reasonable accuracy to start with. I've always trusted the Garmin...
So, a bit of amateur mathematics suggested to me that - assuming the Garmin reading was accurate - I could divide 9030 but 2.133 then multiply by 8680 to give me the actual tyre diameter. That gave me 2.050m. Which seems... well, a little short...
I then thought I'd measure the diamter and multiply by 3.14. That gives me 2.135.
I then did the "roll test" and measured the circumference at 2.120m...
So now I'm totally confused about which bloody number to use!!!!!0 -
Hello guys I own Rox 9.0 and I have same issue as FatLarry, every mesuring gives me different number. I do have advice for Larry how to mesure size !
I put WET mark on wheel then roll it, and then messure from center to center of wet mark on floor I think it is quite precise. But if I mesure it from bottom to top it is different so I use my mark to mark metode, try it out.
I have different problem. I do log my rides, but there is no cadence, ok I'm fine with that, but I would like to store my memory data to, but I don't know how
I only have first trip stored, and there are 6 empty places for rest but I can't store it How to do that ?
After ride I pres left button, then reset, then save trip data ! Then I connect to computer and I can't see memmory data, just logbook that I recorded
Do you understand me ? I would like to have trip data and loogbook, but I don't know how to save trip data under number 2-3-4-5-6-7, I just have first trip on Trip 1 !
Please help me, as I find it very anoying that I can't see all data of 1 training after I reset values.0 -
I managed to resolve my wheel size issue shortly after losing the will to live... 2097 turned out to be the proper measure.
The Trip data is stored and you can transfer it to PC. You use the same screen that you use to transfer Logs to a PC - but the Trip data is on a separate tab, beneath the Log data tab.
Worth noting that it will only save the last trip to the PC after you've saved and reset the Trip on the Rox itself.
The last 7 trips are saved on the Rox itself, with the latest saved Trip always being "1".0 -
Hm that is problem my Rox doesn't save it I don't know what you mean trip data is stored ? How is it stored ? Do I have to press anything, reset favorites A ? Or I just don't have to touch anything ?
I have just one trip, only 1, and I drove bike 5 times after that one !
How did you mesure 2097 ?0 -
I got the 2097 measure from another website referred to on this forum then calibrated it against my Garmin and found it was spot on.
When you finish riding, from the main menu press the top left button to reset. It asks "Save trip values?" Press the top right button ("Yes") and you will get a message saying that the trip details are saved and all values are reset.
(If you press the top left button at this point you get a further question about resetting trip values. Could this be what you're doing?)
The latest trip is then saved as "Trip 1" and your values are all reset.
If you're doing this already and it isn't saving the trips then it's broken...0 -
Im not sure if it is broken, as I have 1 trip saved already ..
But yup, I go left button, then right button (YES save), and I don't see it.
I go, reset, yes, save, it says all data saved, and reseted, but when I go to trip 1, nothing is there except old, very old trip 1..
Should I try to put it to factory settings .. then try it out ?
Is there way to reset all trips ? As I have that 1 old one from 4.06, I would like to delete it ..0 -
The trips automatically delete as new ones are saved. You can't delete them from the unit itself but I think you can delete them from the PC. (Not at my home PC to check)
You're following the right procedure, so it sounds like your unit is faulty. I'd recommend you email Sigmasport - service@sigmasport.com0 -
True, this is response from Sigma:
"We are sorry for the inconvenience with the ROX9.0. Please send us your computer without accessories so that we can look at it, because the ROX saved the TRIP automatically. We will immediately send you a replacement model for free of charge.
"
But I did reset to factory settings and made 2 rides just now ! And voila it works ! I have 2 trips saved from 2, I will see if that will continue to work if so it is ok maybe I made some wrong combination with settings donno, we will see in soon future (maybe tommorow or day after).
Thanks Larry for fast replys and help !0 -
Glad you've got it sorted!
That was a pretty quick response from Sigma - quite reassuring.
I lost the cadence reading on my ride home tonight. No idea why - the cadence unit and magnet are in place and the battery is fine. I'd try and fix it if I wasn't completely knackered...0 -
I really wanna pick one of these up in the next few months. Currently using an 1106 and a Halfords HRM but I'm after something with cadence, and this looks to tick all the boxes and means I've only got one thing on the bars.0
-
jonmack, if you do decide to buy one I'd recommend taking a look at Bike24.com. I think you'll get it (delivered) for around £150 from there, I can't find it for less that £220 in the UK now. I've bought from there a few times and been impressed with speed and service.
I couldn't resist a cursory glance at the bike and realised that my lack of cadence reading was because the sensor had been moved. Took me about 20 seconds to put it right.
I'm blaming the lady in the office who cleans the plants at work. We have a love / hate relationship. I love bikes and hate plants. She loves plants and hates bikes. Especially ones that are left resting against them in the office...
I know she was in today and that she had to move my bike to clean the stupid great leafy monstrosity.
Maybe I will let the tyres down on her van next time she comes in. Or maybe I'll take some greenfly into the office. Sweet revenge.0 -
Thought I'd just add that when I bought my 1606L and it came without the computer mount, Sigma posted one too me that came within a week of emailing them. I was pretty impressed with that, although the way the computer doesn't give a low battery notification and instead just slowly stops working properly isn't exactly great...I spent ages trying to adjust my sensors! And then when it did say low battery it died within 2mins! Sorry, a bit off topic there...Racing for Fluid Fin Race Team in 2012 - www.fluidfin.co.uk0

Well I hate at mine clock keeps falling back 2 mins a day. The rest is really great.
Larry this is not first response from Sigma, they responded fast, but with totally wrong answer.
I explained that I know how to save logbook but trip is not working and answer was: "for log press front button for 2 seconds, for stoping press 2 seconds again" That was really not good answer, cause I said I know how to save logs, but trips are not saved, then I wrote little bit harsh mail and got this response for new unit !
But I would recommend this unit to anybody who is new to this ..0 -
And when I finally tough it works fine new problem happens.
Yesterday after ride. I stopped logbook, put it in my pocket. I was out then after few hours I tried to transfer data to my computer. First I noticed clock was same as end of ride 19:48, not 1:28 (current time) ... it was odd, then I tried to check memory, clear, reset trip data, but I couldn't do a thing on it, not 1 click changed screen from screen with frozen wrong time
Then I connect it on computer, then it worked, I transfered logbook, but again, no memory of trip, it was already reseted ?! I set a clock to 1:28 and now, I check it says 1:30 I shake it, click with finger from behind where battery is, then changed to 1:31, ...
Now I put battery out for few sec then put it back but again clock stopped 11:36 4 mins ago. I guess my computer is broken after all
1 odd thing, you wouldn't believe my clock goes backwards 1 minute, now it says 11:35, I saw it first time too ...
I will again try with factory settings, but after that if I see 1 little problem I will give it back , and waste lots of time waiting for new one to come0 -
I wouldn't waste any more time - it's clearly a faulty unit and you should take them up on their offer of a replacement.0
-
You are probably right, but I do lots of rides now, and I don't want to lose data (logs) at least ..
Ok after reset it works again, but I have 1 small problem. In Favorites A menu, I usually saw on top 4 small icons with data ( heart rate, cadence, % of uphill and alt) but now I see only alt and % ? Where can I change it, is this error too ?
I will probably send it back to Sigma, I wait for seller what he has to say about my problems, maybe I get new unit faster.0 -
Are you riding the bike? Cadence and Heart Rate only show when the unit is mounted on the bike, the heart strap is being worn and the pedals are turning...0
-
That is not true ... I'm 90% sure ...
That I saw zeros on that place but saw all 4 little icons on top of main screen in Favorites A.
Even before mount, ... Alt would only work without mounting, but rest would be 0, but all 4 icons, hm, maybe after 1st time on bike, cause now it is reseted. Believe me before reset I had all 4 icons on top. and I could zoom to all of them.
So far, clock is working, this is his last chance. Aldo I think I will change it, just want to wait for best time for replacement.0
