I have been reading your reviews as I want to upgrade my Claude Butler ravana after getting the cross country bug while doing a helly hanson challenge :
I am 510 ish and around 14st 10 lb , if this make a difference , am just getting into serious training for a series of duathlon . tri events so getting fitter and want a bike for some hard trail fun and some other hanson style events as part of my training and also as something different to enjoy... can afford around the £500 mark .
I due to my newbee status have no idea what is a good fork , group set , what remote lock out is , or how to determine which of your suggestions is going to be the best fun and make flying around a bit easier .
also if anyone can suggest a place which has some good tracks in dorset to get muddy on would appreciate it

A bit of reading for you:

Maybe worthwhile looking for a 2008 model with some discount. Concentrate on a descent frame and fork as these are the most expensive to replace. Forkwise look for a Rockshox Tora, Recon or at a push Reba.
And remember you need to try before you buy.
Can`t help with Dorset, sorry.0 -
