Worth Upgrading?

New to cycling at the time, 18 months ago I bought an entry level Trek road bike. I was going to buy a better bike, but feared that cycling would be a passing phase, so better to waste £500 rather that twice that amount.

I still have the cycling bug, and have an urge to get another, better specced bike. I wonder if the Trek frame is good enough to keep, and just upgrade to better components, or would I get a better components AND frame on a £1200 (ish) bike?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

The Trek frame is reasonable and would benefit from wheel upgrades in particular, however the costs of components makes a new bike and selling on your old one a better proposition. You can get a decent frame and ultegra components for around £1k.

Its always good to have a winter bike - one you don't mind getting caked in salt through the winter months - so buying a whole new bike (if you can afford it) would be your best option IMO. As alfablue says, for £1000 you can get a damn good bike these days (Ribble/Planet X/Focus). And if your employer has a cyclscheme in place then you can get a £1000 for around £600 :)

Hard to be sure without knowing what you have at the moment, but I'm pretty confident you'd get a better frame AND components on a £1000 + bike. As mentioned, Planet X and Focus do brilliant value carbon framed bikes with quality kit for a grand or just over. Keep the Trek for the crap weather or sell it on.

If you have an employer cajole them into a cyclescheme; huge saving. :D

    Thanks for the replies.

Fatlarry - lovely bike, but the ish is just a little TOO ish. :)

I like the look of the new Ribble Sportive bike, but cant see an option for a triple, which I feel I need as I live in a hilly area of Scotland. I'mm of to the Lakes soon so I think I'll drop into their shop in Preston and try the bike for size. Could I buy this on a C2W scheme?

Thank again for tipping me over the edge towards a new bike, which, if I'm honest, is what I wanted all along. :)
