Rear mech wobbly?

Hi.

I was having a fiddle with me bike, and when I was handling the rear mech arm to clean the dirt off it I noticed that it could wobble left to right, and I could see the large bolt the rear mech is secured on by is wobbly, well not the bolt, but the actual housing around the bolt, maybe it just needs tightening? I'm not sure, or maybe it is just normal?

Clearly in the pic below, it's the big large bolt I'm talking about.

Thanks

    so do you:

    a) try tightening it

    or

    b) type a message on an internet forum

You chose (b) - I'm afraid that's the wrong answer...

**** off if you are going to post in every one of my topics like that.

I did not want to touch it without been advised as I've had enough go wrong with it already I don't want to end up breaking anything elsen.

to be fair, not all of them Will - just the ones where the answer ought to be steamingly-obvious... :)

the last thing I want to do is end up having to REPLACE something again because it's BROKE, I'm not going to touch it until I've been advised, knowing the problems the bike has had It might result in stripping the thread or something.

realistically, you can either try tightening it - or just stare at it in the hope that it may tighten itself.

if you try tightening it and it gets tighter - problem solved.

if you try tightening it and it just spins, then the thread is stripped.

Either way, tightening it will give you the answer.

I've attempted it, would not tighten anymore, don't know what is wobbling then, hopefully it is normal, I'll just ask em on the club run to have a tinker with it.

if it is tight already and not spinning, then you may have lost the circlip that holds the mounting bolt to the mech...

Don't see how I could have lost it, I've never took the mech off.

I wasn't implying you may be personally culpable for its loss - I just mean it might not be there any more...

How can it have been lost though since the rear mech has never been took off.

Mech bolt could have come loose, movement cracks circlip, circlip falls off. Quite plausible, though not too likely. Easily checked by removing mech and looking at the other side of the bolt.

However, the arm that holds the jockey wheels will normally have a little side to side play, more so if a long cage.

A little civility all round would be good, I think; no names, no pack drill

Stop winding the poor bloke up  I don't think Willihub appreciates it. He's fairly new, and he has worries about his bike - show some understanding, even if he antagonises you slightly...

Is your rear mech bolted to a hanger? If so it could be the hanger that loose.

BTW This made me laugh. But I can see how it could be wearing. On the other hand they do say 'if you can't take a joke, then you shouldn't have joined up'.

Will, you're obviously keen to learn how to look after your own bike, which is commendable. If you haven't, I recommend you buy a good maintenance book and when you're not using the bike for a while, ie no time pressure, go through the tasks you'd like to learn.
If you take your time, you'll be fine.

    Thanks
    Will.

jeezus Will just ignore the silly twat and he'll go away.

The steel fixing bolt of the rear mech is set into the aluminium mech with a plastic bush and secured by a circlip

From what you've described the plastic bush/seal and possibly the circlip faces have worn excessively .
I would suggest you buy a new mech if it is giving you shifting problems. Its a non servicable part and no amount of tightening is going to take up the wear in the bush

They are £30 ish at ribble but used mechs on ebay are usually around £15-£20 and there are lots of riders upgrading so you should find something

You seem jinxed by bad luck. And you've tightened up the bolt as much as you can ?

Do you have replaceable gear hangers ? Is that loose ?
