Hey guy's, i currently have a trek 6000 08. So far i have upgraded to rockshox reba sl's, selle italia saddle, shiamno spd's (deore equivalent) and bontrager mud-x tryes.

I mainly ride agressive xc/singletrack with small drops and jumps.

I'm currently looking at upgrading my wheels and chainset/groupset, however i'm on a budget so i can't go mad.

In regard to wheels i have narrowed it down to 3 different sets; the 09 mavic cross rides, slx hubs on mavic 717 or dt 4.2 rims with dt black d/b spokes or xt hubs on mavic 717 or dt 4.2 rims with dt black d/b spokes. All of these having center lock hubs .
What would be best in terms of strength, weight and speed? If i was to go for the custom option which rim would be best, 717 or dt 4.2?

In regards to groupsets/chainsets, this will be something i won't do immediately but would be nice to know for the future as no doubt it will happen eventually!
I have narrowed it down to the shimano slx groupset with brakes or possibly the xt groupset with brakes. Would the xt be worth the extra cash or would i be best mixing and matching...slx cranks, xt rear mech etc??

I'd go for the 717's personally although there's not a whole lot of difference over a DT 4.2.

As for groupset I guess it depends if you're replacing everything at once (in which case probably best to look for a full group offer rather than mixing and matching) or replacing bits as they wear out (in which case you need to look it on an item by item basis). Personally I run a mix of SLX, XT and XTR on the same bike and if all works fine. I'd certainly recommend the SLX chainset, I'd probably be tempted to go for XT shifters/mechs (SLX is pretty close though), brakes I think there's a difference on the servo-wave or bite point adjustment between XT and SLX (I don't use Shimano brakes though).

My mate has DT 4.2 rims where I have 717's.

    Mine have stayed truer.

As for a groupset, I would say SLX is probably the best way to go. However this looks like a bargain.
