Is it normal that while the left lever clicks up for trimming in reasonably small distances when clicking down it just jumps straight back to the beginning?

It seems so... I have Centaur 2008 and works pretty much like that. You can adjust the tension and make it slightly better. Is it a problem for you?
I have also a Shimano 105 bike and it's pretty much the same I have to say. I think technology in front derailleurs in general is still quite primitive. Rear ones are a lot smootherleft the forum March 20230 -
The 08 models have the QS escape mechanism - the 09 models have reverted back to the incremental ratchet which allows you a more progressive movement.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Seems this is so. I have a veloce 08 on my winter bike (came of new best bike, replaced with old chorus on new bike). The veloce has no trim going down chain rings but has when moving to larger chain rins, I've hated it aver since I used it. The older chorus is much better.
Does anyone know if the newer 09 Centaur is the same or has it reverted back to the incremental ratchet...As I'm thinking of replacing the veloce.3 grand bike...30 Bob legs....Slowing with style0 -
I have 09 Centaur and its got incremental ratchet mechanism.
So much better than quick shift.I used Centaur in centenary grey before I upgraded to 09 Centaur.I didn't want quick shift.
Apparently some companies can adapt the QS shifters to work normally.0 -

Never knew this was a problem having had 08 chorus 'quick shift' on my race bike for about a year...never had any trimming issues...I don't see how anyone can have problems if the derailleur is adjusted correctly in the first place...this is good quality kit people!0 -

The 08 Centaur shifters just feel really crude and clunky. My winter bike has Shimano Tiagra and even they work better.
What does Quick shift mean and why have Campag got rid of it?Pegoretti

Think of a socket set ratchet. Then think about that ratchet only having 3 clicks per revolution. That makes it difficult to use in small spaces. Now think of that same ratchet but with 9 clicks per revolution.I makes it so much easier to turn it where needed.
This is in a nutshell Quick shift. It must have been good as Campag only used it for 2 years before reverting back to the previous method.
It was meant to be faster to change gear on the front rings and it probably was to some extent but chain rub was all to often an irritating issue on the front mech.
I saw some guy on youtube offering even tighter ratchet mechanisms, not sure how good they are though?0 -
QS has nothing to do with the number of clicks for the front mech.
QS is all to do with the geometry of the arm of the front mech.
I think some people are getting confused between the "escape" mechanism and QS. The Escape mechanism is where there is only 2 or 3 clicks on the front mech and doesn't have the ability to dump gears.
Record and Chorus 07/08 both have QS and still have the ability to dump gears and proper trimming on the front mech.0
