different levels of cramp

Hi,

I had an argument woith a friend about cramp. I sometimes get full-on painful cramp that takes ages to go away, feels like my leg is gonna explode and I feel the effects for days afterwards.

But I sometimes get a twinge which seems to be a warming from my body: shift your position or I'll cramp up like the above.

My friend reckons cramp is only ever the full-on variety.

Who's right? What is it that I'm gettin gif it's not cramp?

Andy
You just have to ride like you never have to breathe again.

am I alone in getting these?

it's just a warning that you need to stop pussyfooting around work harder and MTFU. Then you'll get proper cramp

I get it too and if I keep going with any intensity it does indeed go to disabling fall-off-the-bike cramp
If you haven't got a headwind you're not trying hard enough

I once saw someone ( I would say myself to make me look like some tough mofo, but I'd be lying), who got such serious cramp in his calf it left a bruise!

Initially I thought it was cool. 8)

    Untill I saw him walk.
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.
  • Whatever you do, if you ever get the "warning twitches" prelude to a full-blown muscle cramp, DON'T under ANY circumstances think you'll teach it who's in control by flexing that muscle on purpose until it goes away.

I did that once to a calf muscle and ended up falling off the bike and writhing around on the pavement in agony with tears in my eyes. Pain couldn't be undone even when attempting to relax the muscle...

    Hi Vermooten,
Here is a link to the NHS website page about cramp
    http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1066.aspx?C ... goryID=147

It does not say what degree of agony you have to experience before it meets your friend's criteria to qualify as real cramp. In my humble opinion, however, that is not really the correct question

You have a pain (be it "cramp" or "twinge") which is not too extreme but it is a warning. Synchronicity (Carl Jung's love child?) points out what happens if you do not heed the warning.

The next time your friend falls off his bike and writhes around in agony like Synchro you could ask him if it was the "cramp" or "twinge" warning that he ignored. - I bet you won't get a civil answer until he recovers :?
