Hi

I currently have a scott scale 60 (08): -

http://scottusa.com/gb_en/product/375/641/scale_60

I am looking to change the wheels and add some Disc brakes to the setup.

I mainly do XC wich involves small jumps (2 foot tall). I weigh 10.5 stone.
I have kindly been pointed in the direction of XT hubs with Maviv XC717 rims.

Can anyone tell me : -

What spokes i should get?
Should i get upgraded nipples?
will the Mavic xc717 rims be strong enough for what im doing - are there any other rims / hubs i should look at?

(Sorry for all the questions)

Will my bike take disc brakes (i believe it has the mounts on the fork (Tora 302) and on the rear of the frame)?
how do i know which size rotor i need / what is the difference?
Lastly, what disc brakes would people recommend?

I am looking to spend around £400 for the wheel set AND Disc brake set.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Manyn Thanks

Nick

first you need to have a look at the left rear drop out area and see if it has disc mounts.

    2 holes like.

  • Thanks for that Northern Monkey
will that be strong enough fo what i want to do with them?
Will these wheels be lighter than what i have at the moment?
    Thanks

You can fit any disc size, within reason, up to 200mm on your forks, but you'll only need 180mm - ish. You can run a smaller rotor on the rear to save weight if you want. Different disc sizes are accomodated with different size adaptors between the fork/ frame and the caliper.
The rims you suggest are fine for trail work and the drops you desribe. I wouldn't 'upgrade' from steel nipples to aluminium nipples as there tend to seize, the same weight loss can be achieved in the tyres and tubes.
I would recomend Avid brakes Juicy 3 or 5
    Hayes brakes stroker
    Formula brakes K18 or K24

its an upgrade to lockable brass nipples. not alu.

  • then some hope mono mini's w/floating rotor for £120 each end.

  • Check out merlin cycles. They do wheel and brake packages at very keen prices. Avid Juicey Carbon with Mavic rims on Deore hubs for less than £300. I'm sure they'd do XT hubs for a bit more. You could get Hope brakes and hubs for sub £400.

This is a very racy XC frame - not sure of trying to put it over jumps and fitting Dh sized brakes to it.

400 quid is nearly as much as the bike cost. The spec suggests the wheels are in fact disc ready for centrelok Shimano.

I'd just spend 100 quid or so and bang some cheap Deore discs on for now.

You could of course save a load of money and just buy some XTR V-brakes + levers. Although they don't have the ultimate stopping power of discs they are mega-powerful, progressive, light and require virtually no maintenance.
