Summer is finally upon us and with that it the Voluntary Cycling Restrictions come into effect on Snowdon. So if you do fancy tackling the mighty peak at the moment its either going to have to be a dawn raid or and after hours sortie
So far this voluntary restriction is working well, safeguarding our long term access to this very fine ride. The restrictions apply to
The Llanberis Path
The Rhyd Ddu Path
The Snowdon Ranger Path
The voluntary restriction on cycling on the Snowdon bridleways is in effect between 10 am and 5 pm from 1st of may until the 30th September. This was agreed by a wide range of public bodies and individuals, and seeks to ensure safety of all path users, and avoid conflict between users
Please respect the voluntary agreement, or risk having a complete ban on cycling0 -

Check some of my pics out - if you want a spectacular challenge, try setting off about 2am and arrive at the summit in time for sunrise. Don't expect to see much though, it's perpetually in fog! The route is on here under routes tab if you need a map.0 -
My avatar is a dawn raid on Snowdon at half-way-point btw And when you get to the top you'll have a shed load of walkers looking open mouthed at what you have achieved. Then a load more staring after your dust trail as you scream back to Llanberis.0

I did last year. Late June time I think. We set off up at about 5.30pm. (only met about 30 walkers on the way up, even though it was a cracking evening. We were back in the pub by 7.30! About 90mins up, bit of a rest and then one of the best rides of my life on the way back down. Deffo doing it again this year but going to go down the Rangers track this time.0

Go this weekend - it is going to be cold & sunny, should be pretty good.
BTW can we have a voluntary ban on calling it 'Mount Snowdon' ? It's Snowdon or Yr Wyddfa in Welsh.0 -

You can blame that lump, Chris Moyles for that0 -

If you're fairly fit (like me) you should be able to ride at least 90% of it.
I walked up in October last year with my Asthmatic wife and it took about 3 hours ! There's a lot of the rough path being replaced with steps though which actually makes it harder to ride but obviously easier to walk!
It's definitely a ride down!0 -
Me and a friend are doing Snowdon in April.
What tyres have people used? had success with?
What's the ranger's path like for coming down?
What time is sunrise at Snowdon? I'm sure there is a website to find this out, if anyone knows? lol0 -
Some of the Llanberis path is rideable in places, but it's a mixture of walk and push on the ascent.
If you're feeling really hardcore adventurous, you could go up the Llanberis path (which shadows the mountain railway), then come back down the Snowdon Ranger - either have somebody pick you up with a vehicle at the bottom, or you can turn off part way down and head back over the col between Foel Goch and Moel Cynghorion back to Llanberis.0 -

MOST of it is rideable, particularly if there are no walkers to negotiate, just take it steady and pick your line carefully.
Tyres wise, I had Conti MK UST 2.4s and my mate had 2.1 High Rollers. No problems with either to be honest. I was expecting a couple of pinch punctures on the way down!0 -

Depends how fit/lardy you are and how much ale you threw down your neck the previous evening!!0 -
It's an awesome ride, done it three times now and i'm a fat boy  .
The last time we did it we went up the Llanberis Path, down the Ranger's Path and then back to Llanberis via the Telegraph Bridleway, see here - http://northwalesmtb.proboards85.com/in ... hread=12870 -

May have a go at it then - I'm in Betws-y-coed on Tues, weds thurs next week going to ride The Dragons back at CYB, Llandegla and Penmachno.... may substitute one of em for Snowdon... have to keep an eye on the weather for that though....0

What sort of bikes you guys doing it on? I'd have to get my Bro to do it, but he has a Kona Stinky....pretty much flummoxed by and increase in gradient
we do quite alot of fell walking so getting up there pushing wouldn't be a problem
Does anyone have a route written down for this?

Does anyone have a route written down for this?
it's really fairly obvious. You can't go wrong.0 -

crikey.
OK then, a route written down:
Set off from Llanberis. Follow 3m-wide track to top of Snowdon. Turn around at top, follow 3m-wide track back down. Drink beer.0 -

I would SERIOUSLY avoid all attempts at Snowdon at present unless you are a fully committed mountaineering type. Three people have died already in the last 10 days on Snowdon, and most of them were fully kitted out out for mountaineering in ice and snow.
Honestly, if you're going to bike it, leave it until July or August - the worst you're going t o get then is rain.0 -
Snowdon on the bike at the moment is for those with a death wish. Three have died there in the last week, and another has just been plucked to safety. It's ice axes and crampon territory (and the knowledge of how to use them) up there at present . It's serious winter mountaineering up there at present; for the experienced only.
Not for bikers who have to ask for a route guide.Frank Yates0 -
The route above Cwm Clogwyn is covered in hard packed snow and ice and is extremely dangerous - don't venture into this area unless you are and experience fell walker and have crampons and ice axe. I would suggest now is not the time to attempt to bike to the summit0
-
I did it on my Orange 5 SE,my mate was on his Stumpy FSR I think, or maybe he had his Meta 5.5 then, I honestly can't remember!
The route is dead easy if you go up and down the Llanberis path, just follow the signs from the town to Snowdon and then follow the path up! I'd suggest goingup and down the same route first time, at least you'll know what to expect on the way down and shouldn't get lost!0 -
Kewl. Just been told i have the parents car from mid march so I might take a trip up there0
