resistance trainer

Hi all
Just got a 2nd hand resistance trainer and i am a bit unsure of what sort of training programs I should be doing on it .Should I ride for a long time and put the miles in or should i keep it short but with plenty of resistance. I.e. build up power? Any suggestion of how to get the best out of this kit would be useful
