Replacement Pedals...

My Boardman Team came with SPD pedals, but I've not got a pair of shoes to fit.
Am I better off replacing these pedals to use any shoe, or should I got and buy a pair of shoes?
I'm thinking replace them with a pair of spd pedals that have a "traditional" platform so I can use any shoes now, and then add a pair of shoes later.
The Boardman came with a "pedal insert" on the SPD pedals, but it offers absolutely no grip!

I'd buy a cheap pair of platform pedals and use them until you are used to the bike. You may even keep them on! The SPD with platforms offer little grip with normal shoes as the SPD section is still there, and the dual sided ones always seem t be the wrong way up.0
