Wheelset price increases - so whats best?
CRC just the price of Shimamo 7850 CLs up to 550 odd. Were 485 last week. Thats the way it is I guess but now less likely to buy...
want some light clinchers for the summer alpine trips (if I sort my bloxdy knees out in time)
so what do I get
Shamals? KL premiums? Fulcrum Zeros? the newly priceed Shimano's
Got to buy a groupset so fit doesnt matter as can go either way on hubs
Only ever had Mavics ....advise welcome

sorry yeah I know this gets asked all the time
would still value an opinion on best lightest alu/carb clincher for under less than 750 thanks0 -
My head hurts with it all.
I THINK I've finally plumped for Bontrager Race X Lite.My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

literally, a wheel-related question is asked about twice a day. If you do a search, you should find plenty of info...0

ok fxxk it ....forget the question - Ive reverted back to my tried and tested criteria namely "oh, they look nice and it doesnt matter as Im shxt at cycling anyway "
off to bed0 -
That's pretty much what I did. I like the "style" of Bonty wheels. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

By all accounts, the new WH-7850 CLs are the boys to get for clinchers, just shop around for a good price. £527 at shinybikes.com btw.0

excellent choice. Fantastic set of hoops.0 -
I wouldn't touch anything Bontrager personally. My experience of Bontrager wheels have been very negative. Thin, weak and unreliable.
But each to their own!!0 -
I'm in the same boat and I'm tempted by one of the new DA clinchers on the back but something cheaper up front, maybe a handbuilt, maybe an older-but-new wheel. Obviously it would look a tad odd but this doesn't really bother me. The rear is more important IME and the DA fronts are expensive IMO.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0

That's sort of what I've got, but with an 840g Ksyrium SL Rear and a 743g WH-5600 front. Re: Shimano, one option could be to go with the 7850-CL rear and the 7850-SL (scandium front) ? - although, the SL front still costs £207 on CRC (bit pricey) - another option - the 712g 7801 DA front for £150 ish? (one or two places still advertises them) - or cheaper again, the Ultegra SL for £90 ish or even the WH-5600 for £70 (same rim as the Ultegra)?
Pleased with my budget setup in as much as its a pretty-light rear and an ok weight/ok aero front (according to that chart that floats around from time to time).0 -
leading on from Mettan's comments
CRC are doing Fulcrum Racing 1 front for £200 and the Racing 3 for £150
both a bit cheaper than the 7850 SL scandium at £250 - not sure where you got the 207 figure from Mettan... ?
Or the 6600 SL Ultegra front at £123...
There may well be even lower prices elsewhere, of course.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
That'll be the Shimano price rises hitting
- literally, yesterday afternoon the 601 was £87 and the Ultegra SL was £99 and the 7850 SL was £207 (been breathing CRC prices recently). The R550 front is still a huge bargain at £39.99 (tempted to get one).

It heps to aske yourself the followin quewstions when considering wheels:
1. Your weight - are the wheels strong / stiff enough if you are heavy; light enough if you're a skinny bag of bones?
2. Purpose - deep section aero or conventional 30mm ally rims
3. Price
4. Blinginess
My process is to start with looks, then research each option against the more (higher placed) practical ranking. Google is quite useful for this, as it will locate any posts in this forum quicker than it takes to search the forum itself.
If you post a Q about wheels, then it helps to make that question much more specific than simply which wheels should I get?0 -
Has anyone checked out the RS80's yet?

Yes, they look awesome value - (~390g rims) apparently - asked around a couple of online retailers - expected release date June (they didn't sound entirely sure about this though).0 -

haha. £320 but none available.
I'm "selling" them for £199 a pair. Just let me know.
You'll be lucky. Expect £500 come December (2010)0 -
not tubeless though, by the look of it.
I must admit, I am tempted by the tubeless thing. From what I've read so far it looks impressive.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
