How far do you travel before you start riding ?

The other day I was talking to some lads who had driven from Solihull to ride on the Chase, and I wondered how far people regularly travel before they start riding. Do you ride from your doorstep or travel further afield ?

depends.....
I can ride from my front door to the pentlands.
Innerleithen and GT are about 30 - 45 minutes away so that is usually the furthest.
Usually try to do a number of big rides each year...and camp up north and bag some munro's.....so thats a trek....Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

Not much on my doorstep, but 'travel' doesn't have to mean 'drive'.0
-
Unfortunately due to living in the city centre, I inevitably have to drive to get to any 'decent' riding - generally travel about an hour to ride - current haunt being Sherwood Pines. Sucks traveling, but makes it worth it when you blast down that first piece of singletrack!0

The annoying thing for me is not being able to ride any decent trails from my front door. I've got a fairly decent loop about 20 minute drive away but regularly go back to Wales (1hr+) to ride anything really worthwhile.0

.blitz,
Have to travel practically every time I want to ride. Live in Cheshire so the only thing for miles are flat trails . Regularly travel to Peaks & Shropshire to visit friends and tie in a ride :P .___________________________

Plenty on my doorstep, havent traveled in the car to anywhere for a long time for a ride. Cycled to Loch Lomond in October for the WHW single track....thats a good 40 miles before you even hit the Loch.0

I live in Cambridgeshire, so have to travel a long way to find anything good.
Thetford = 55 miles :?
Cannock Chase = 105 miles
Coed Y Brenin = 153 miles
Llandegla = 170 miles :evil:Boardman Road Comp '08

I live on the outskirts of the Lakes, 20 minutes drive from Grizedale so I'm lucky I don't have to drive too far, but it's annoying that there's not a lot to ride straight to from the home.0

i have a couple of good loops from my doorstep but am in a pretty good location to drive to some fantastic trail centres.
Coed Y Brenin: 10mins
climachx: 30mins
Penmachno: 30mins
Marin: 40mins
Llandegla: 1 hour
Nant Yr Arian: 1hour 15mins

Usually doorstep but occasionally chuck the bike in the car.
God riding a 10m drive away and Dartmoor is about an hour/70 miles.0 -

I think I probably speak on behalf on many people now by saying that I am very jealous!0 -
Typically doorstep (bridlepath 50m from the front door), but I do drive to places too.0

Where is your local loop mate? I drive about 30mins over to Bristol for my "local" rides, which is ok, but I do miss living in Devon and having Woodbury Common on my doorstep!0 -
About 18 foot to my shed ;-)

Usually 40 mins to an hour - not much good riding can be done from the door in Lancaster, but Staveley is about 35-40 mins away and Grizedale about an hour. Plus Llandegla is only an hour and 40 mins or so.
Not bad at all really but I still fancy moving somewhere where I can do decent riding from the door.0 -
Need to drive about an hour to take in any sort of decent MTBing. Blackpool and surrounding areas are flat as a pancake.
Nearest is the Trough of Bowland or Rivington, but generally ride Lakes or Dales.0 -

Might have to check it out sometime. I hear there's some decent stuff around Box too, but never really had a good look.0 -
I have lived in various parts of the UK and Europe and have always managed to head off from the front door. Currently where I live is great for heading straight out. I do however from time to time jump on a train to head further away (Stirlingshire,Oban) I do cycle from my front door to Gourock which is 5 mins away to get the Cal-Mac ferry over to Dunoon to cycle round Argyl Forest.0

I did live in Buxton so had miles of trails that I could get to from the top of my garden, as well as an old quarry for "playtime". I moved 20 minutes down the road to Leek and the riding is not so expansive...lots of road riding (or footpaths!) needed to link the trails. The problem is I begrudge even a 20 minute drive to the trails so I've resorted to playing in the woods instead (on my bike might I add). Am I spoilt?0

depends. living in Glasgow means that Im never more than 10 minutes away from a skatepark or a foresty bit and no more than maybe an hours ride from the hills.
there are no trail centres here, we dont need them.0 -
the nearest trail centre to me is Cannock - 1 hour away. When I lived in Buxton it was, er, probably still Cannock! I stick to natural trails mostly, but with young kiddies waiting at home my riding is usually only a couple of hours at a time. Riding an hour to get to the ride is appealing but not really an option.0

To ride in Sherwood pines/Theives wood I have to travel to the kitchen to get the bike out of it's bedroom
To ride in Derbyshire it's about 35-40 miles depending on where we go fromScott Scale Custom

I live between Dartmoor & Bodmin moors in the Tamar valley, plenty on the doorstep to keep me busy for 2-3 hours - cheated on Sunday, took the car up the top of the local hill (350m) about 2 miles away & got the train home from the bottom 3 hours later!!

I'm about 50 miles from Peebles, home to Glentress, but the real pain in the a*se is picking up all my mates before we head off!0
