repairing a tub with a perished tube

Hello there,

I recently aquired some nice old road wheels - MAvic SSC tubular rims no less, and they came with Clement silk tubs on them.

The tread has been barely used, but over 20 years the latex cover on the sidewalls has flaked, and the tube has perished.

Is there any point in trying to renovate these? I can think of two reasons; to renovate for someone who wants to build a museum bike, or to actually ride them as I'm sure they are still fantastic.

And if so, how?

  • If the tube inside has perished then there is no way to refurbish. You would have to unpick all the stitching replace the tube and then redo all the stitching. Not economic even you could do it.
