Gary Fisher Merlin or Trek 4500

Looking at WSD MTB's and would like to know which of the two (Gary Fisher Marlin GS or Trek 4500) is the better buy. Yes I know they are both made by Trek and the spec of the Gary Fisher is slightly better (and the price slightly higher) but what about ridability, which will is the better of the two for an improving and budding xc rider?
