MTB for NorCal area?

Hi.
Im lucky enough to be going to work in the Bay Area for a while and am naturally mad keen to ride in Marin.
I'm looking for advice about the type of trails there as I currently have a long-forked hardtail that I find great for the South of the UK - but I'm considering switching back to full-suss. I'd like to get some kind of idea before I go as transporting vs. selling the bike is kind of a hassle. Also I'm kind of a one-bike guy.
Also any thoughts on tyre choice? - I heard the trails there are usually either concrete hard-pack or super-loose.
