I got these shoes just recently to wear on my speacialized rockhopper comp and was wondering what spd pedals to get for them

I made the mistake of not getting the XT deore shimano when I saw them on sale for £25 !
Should I just go cheap like the 520 or the 540 ?
.... never worn SPD's before

I've got xtr ones which are lovely but the 520s are ok - might be worth getting cheapo ones to start to see if you take to them.
Merlin has dome 520s really cheap a while ago - dunno if they still do. I used to have them and they were ok.0 -
520's would be perfect to get you started as they are nice and cheap and still fully adjustable as far as spring tension is concerned.
Two options for the cleats though. Most shimano cleats are 'single-release' (SH51) in that they can only be unclipped by twisting your foot sideways.
To begin with I recommend the 'multi release' type (SH56) which can be released by twisting or lifting (firmly) your foot.
Both types seen here

Unless you want to save about 3grams, you will be very happy with 520's.
I got 505's on my bike as standard (yep there is a lower model than the 520's, but oem only) and have been happy using those for the last 18 months.Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

I had 3 sets of 520's on 2 different bikes and never had any complaints with them at all, i just rode them until the bearings were dead then binned em and put another set on.
For less than £20 a set brand new i really cant see any point in buying anything else unless ur an obsessive weight weeny.0
