Is the citrus one OK on plastic 'n' rubber bits?
  • I work for Finish Line, and I have to say no, it's not safe on plastic or rubber, which is why we make two biodegradable degreasers, Ecotech Multi and Citrus. The former is safe on all materials, but is slightly weaker, the latter is safe only on metals, but is slightly stronger. Keep in mind that "plastic and rubber" also applies to things like the brushes you use to clean your bike. If you use Citrus with a brush, it will warp the bristles, which is why we include Ecotech and not Citrus in our Chain Cleaner Kit.

As for whether or not Citrus kills fish, I can't really say. Since most bike frames and components don't contain live fish, we haven't really tested it on them, but I'm going to take a risk and say no, it doesn't. It's made of orange peels and is 100% biodegradable. That said, I'm not recommending it as a nutrient source for your fish.

Personally, I like our Speed Clean Speed Degreaser. Like Ecotech, it's safe on all materials, but it's enormously powerful, even more so than Citrus, and dries really quickly. I go into more detail in my blog for Finish Line, www.maintainthatride.blogspot.com.

If you have any questions, you can also send me an email at my Finish Line address, spetrella@finishlineusa.com. Don't want to use this forum for "commercial purposes" or anything....

I buy Virosol citrus degreaser in 5 litre containers- very cheap on Ebay. Like Park cirus degreaser but a fraction of the price. It is very aggressive but I have 10l of the stuff in my parts washer and it hasn't eaten through the plastic pump housing yet..

Just to be clear, the fish bit was very much a throwaway line. Like un jour sans, I have not tested it!

Im a bit lost here, why be so concerned about whether the degreaser kills fish? Surely the grease and oil that its taking off (and being mixed with) will do the damage anyway?
    Am i missing something?
  • I think I can speak for both myself and Nuggs when I say it was just a joke, bluecow.

Obviously, you're right in stating that the grime on the chain does much more environmental damage than the degreaser you use to remove it. It was on my mind yesterday when i went for a ride here in northern New York where I live. It's very cold here, with ice, snow, etc., similar to Canada, and they salt the roads so heavily that they're absolutely white with it. When I got back, I washed my bike down with Bike Wash, the product we make to wash down frames, and was appalled at the runoff on the floor. Nasty....we used to make a highly absorbent pad to put under repair stands that I used outside as well, like at a cross race, to minimize runoff, but we didn't sell enough of them, so they kind of went the way of our Grip Shift Lube....

Seriously though, some makes have claims about the product being environmentally friendly but then seem to forget that you dont just pour it straight down the drain. (at least not before cleaning the muck off your bike)
  • I know what you mean, because we do it, too.

The thing is, we have to say something about the product itself, especially if it's environmentally friendly and biodegradable, because so many aren't, and it's a fact that's important to many people who don't understand what you're pointing out.

Ideally, we'd come up with gas, motor oil, and anitfreeze that's all environmentally friendly and biodegradable, too, but until that happens, we'll do what we can with the product....

Thanks UJS. I'm going to give the Ecotech stuff a try on your recommendation. :)
