Any recommendations for a decent gilet?
I'm after something reasonably windproof that will not cook me and that I can shove in a rear pocket - any thoughts on pros/cons of mesh backs would be useful. Not settled on a budget yet so anything considered.
Also, if it can make me fitter, faster, younger and richer that would be super.

It doesn't get any easier, but I don't appear to be getting any faster.

I've got a Montane one in black: packs up well small (smaller than a tennis ball) and I've no complaints about performance at all. On sale now at CRC

I love my Rapha gilet.0

I'd certainly recomend a mesh back.
Try rooting around for a Nike one - since they're pulling out of cycling my LBS had a few nice ones at half price. 8)Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.0 -
The Montane one (you can get them in chainreactioncycles.com) is very good for occasional use (probably a bit sweaty if you are looking for one to wear all the time). One thing I really like about it is that its compression pack is designed so you can attach it easily to your stem so its always to hand and doesn't take up back pocket space.0

Gore do an excellent gilet. Two zipped pockets in front, mesh back with little slots so you can reach your jersey pockets.0

+1 for the Gore. I have worn that and arm warmers during the winter0

The Altura Reflex is very good.
Nalini also do a wind fronted one which is excellent vfm too.
I love gilet's very versatile bits of kit.Rock 'n' Roule0 -
Thanks for the replies. Food for thought - although not too much thought in case my brain hurts. It doesn't get any easier, but I don't appear to be getting any faster.0

Shameless plug here, but the YOGi gilet is very lightweight, folds up very small weighing in at 118g with a light, water and wind resistant front and shoulders plus a mesh back. Keeps the wind off and you don't cook. Very exclusive too.......well you did ask!
I also have a Cannondale Morphis jacket which is usually used in a gilet form (mesh shoulder at the back). Great on the colder or wetter days.0 -

I like my rapha one as well but find i get more wear out of my black aldi one - ridiculous value and looks pretty cool too in black.0

Another tick here for the Altura Reflex. Just does what it says on the tin.0

I got a peal izumi one with mesh back. Zephyr i think it is. They come different levels of wind/waterproofing.0

i have the pearl izumi Zephyr too - it;s excellent - wind / water resistant fron, big mesh 'X" on the back so no overheating.

Which Gore?
I've got the Gore Helium WIndstopper gilet and I can confrim that it is the Dog's B's. Keeps you warm on descents and in the brunt of a breeze. It also squashes up very small so that you can stuff it in your back pocket if the day gets warmer.0 -

No not that one. I got one of the 'Italian' ones in the sale. A lot cheaper!
I like Rapha - but even I wouldn't pay £120 for a giletExpertly coached by http://www.vitessecyclecoaching.co.uk/

I had an Assos Element Zero for a birthday present a couple of years ago - expensive, but like all Assos it fits superbly and keeps the wind out without becoming clammy. Having said that I thought it was expensive at the time it was bought me (about £95), just seen the price of them now :shock:Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

ALDI cycling gillet. about £6.50 3 years ago. So pleased with it (and so sure it wouldn't last) I bought another a year later. I'm still waiting for the first to die. I am, however, careful with the zip!
Kitted out wifey and daughter with them as well. Why pay more?2 minute grovels can sometimes be a lot longer..tho' shorter on a lighter bike :-)
