Easton ea90 slx '08 vs '09
Yes, another wheel question for the boards - just for a change!
I'm considering a set of the ea90's at some point in the year since they seemed like a really decent price for the spec.
I've just noticed that wiggle now have the '09 model listed http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Easto ... 360041531/ but the price has jumped up to 540quid!
It seems the differences between the '08 and '09 models are weight and ceramic bearings, as far as I can tell anyway.
My question is; is it worth the extra 150-odd for a 75g weight drop and ceramic bearings or should I try and pickup a set of the '08 models somewhere before they all sell out? Wiggle has already sold out of the Shimano '08 set…

There are a few places still selling the 2008 version if you do some searching and £380 ish seems to be the going rate - so it looks like there is still stock. If you have the cash and like the idea of lighter wheels and the ceramic bearings (which would probably be an expensive upgrade on their own) you could go for the new ones. Most prices are going up with the fall in the pound - so I wouldn't be surprised to see more price rises coming in the next few months. Shimano and Mavic etc prices seem to be much dearer in 2009 for their stuff too - so it's not just Easton. My cycling blog: http://girodilento.com/0

ScottieP: Yeah, having done some searching it does seem that's the going rate. I had been planning on waiting a while to get some wheels but if there's gonna be that big a jump in price I might try and get the '08 models before they sell out.
giant mancp: cheers mate, it does look like quite a few shops do still have them, I guess I sometimes use Wiggle as a bit of a yard stick in terms of what's likely to be running out at other places.
I guess the fact that I'm even asking if an extra 75gms weight and ceramic bearings is worth the extra expense means that I'm probably not gonna really notice the difference anyway!
Whichever I go for they're gonna be a mighty bit smoother and lighter than the bog standard bontragers I'm running just nowHow's that for a slice of fried gold?0 -
If you do get some let us know what they're like eh? Always interesting to hear people's opinions of different kit.0

Yeah I was in my LBS earlier after the SLX and he quoted me a price similar (lower actually) to wiggle, then rang the distributer and they had none (2008) and the 2009 were not available til March, but at the jacked up, weak pound price.
He reckoned the EC90 Aeros I also have my eye on (in stock) would jump close to £200
Aparently it's likely to go that way across the board with stuff that's imported and there ain't too many UK producers anymore!0 -
I have the 08s (or possibly 07s as I bought them a year ago). Great wheels at the then price £380. rrp at the time was 450 i believe.
And if you run them with conti 4000S tyres you can get the tyres on with just thumbs, and I'm only a little feller!0
