Help... researched into confusion, cervelo or focus
i was just about to order the carbon focus 105 2009 (which seems a pricier downgrade from last year!!!), when i got an email from my local cervelo dealer.
coming in around £1700 but think if i use sram rival i can get it below £1550.
this seems a good deal compared to the focus cayo, i read the frame is immence..
what should i do?????... email below
After looking at the spec. if we substituted all the Ultegra kit for 105 we are looking at £1668.65 and if we drop down to a Bontrager race wheel we could squeeze it down further to £1620.69
Obviously go for the best you can afford in the first instance but bear in mind you can always upgrade slowly as things wear out...
Personally I would down spec to 105 on everything except the STI levers which I would keep as Ultegra as they are much better internally and try to stick with the Fulcrum EVO 5 wheels. This would leave you with a price of £1709.75

we base our initial quote on Shimano Ultegra we can always make adjustments to lower spec such as 105 if price is an absolute issue.
Cervelo S1 frame to include fork, sealed bearing headset and seat pin
Ultegra SL group to include Chainset, BB, F mech, R mech, cassette, chain, brakes, STI levers and all cables...
Fulcrum EVO 5 wheel set
Bontrager race lite tyres 700 x 23mm
Bontrager race lite tubes
3T ARX stem (length TBA)
3T Ergosum alloy handlebars
Cork bar tape
Selle Italia XO gel saddle
Ultegra SPD SL pedals
Total price £1823.24
Ideally we would get you in to the shop and take some key body dimensions from you which will give us a bike fit to work from and guidance to your optimum frameset dimensions. This service would be included in the price as would all assembly charges and a complimentary first service after approx 200 miles...

Let me just say that I have neither of these bikes. I have read great things about both. All I can say if this; if I had the money for a Cervelo (and shed space), I would get one, no questions.0

I have ranted about this ad nauseum in the past (http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... highlight=) so won't repeat myself again now. All I can say is that I've got a Soloist Team (the old name for the S1) and it is utterly awesome. Can't ever imagine wanting to change it for anything else.0

Sea Green - is that the alu or the CF version ? I'd heard that the CF version is a lot harsher than the Alu ?0

Mine's the alu version.
I've not ridden the CF soloist (out of my budget and way OTT for what I would use it for - sigh) so can't really offer sensible comment. However, when I was buying mine, a chap who had owned both (Greg66 of these forums in fact) reckoned he found the CF Soloist to be hard work, in contrast to his Team which he could ride all day. He had ended up swapping the CF Soloist for an R3 and keeping the Team as his winter bike...0 -
3T Ergosum bars are very nice if that helps...0

I owned an S1, now have a R3. The handling difference is huge.
However,
The Focus is one stiff frame. The CF Cervelos are all the stiffest you can buy, and even the R3 is not very compliant.
I'm looking now at an RS.
The focus will probably be much lighter.
Stiffer is not always better.0 -
The S1 is not as stiff as you might think, but it IS an AWESOME frame. I'd go with that.
As Martin VN ^^ I went from the Soloist Team (what the S1 was called until the '09 model range came out) to an R3. The R3 is much stiffer, but still very comfortable.
My Soloist Team was more comfortable than the Ti frame I had before it.0
