Most discs squeek when wet, just be glad you don't have avids or hopes, the squeal like crazy!

Check the caliper alignment and that the rotor is straight. Not much more that you can do after that other than try different pads.

Some people recommend putting some coppaslip on the backs of the pads, but this is generally not a good idea as it can contaminate the pads.

Also, are they still working well?
  • yea i got new pads but i was wondering if that was the best idea because it was quite expensive :(
  • use a specific disk brake cleaner on your rotor's then sand the top layer of the pads down, that cured the squeal in my trail carbon's

AS long as you don't get any on the contact face, it's not a problem. I always stick a smear on mine and no problems.

i'll try that on the old pads and see if i can salvage them as an emergency pair
  • My Stroker Rydes make a horrendous noise if it's cold or wet. Both with the original pads and I've tried the Superstar pads. Everything's torqued up correctly, I've applied a little bit of copper grease to the back of the pads, but it's a total nightmare. In fact, when I apply the back brake and it starts squealing, I can feel serious vibrations coming up through the frame
  • thats the same as happened to me

i just replaced the pads with the sintered metallic pads
  • Did the sintered pads make any difference to the noise?
  • it's hard to say. i think i had contaminated pads so any set of pads would of got rid of that. but they were more expensive
  • Cool. What sintered pads did you get and did you get them locally or online?
  • i got them in the dales on the north side of the city but behind bars in shawlands said they were getting them in

I live across the road from Behind Bars
  • cool should be easy for you then. i live a whole 10 mins walk away
  • Does anyone know if you can buy the retaining spring from the back of the pads separately? I got a set of stroker carbons for christmas, had to change the hose length on the back, so my LBS fitted new hoses for me.

I've only done maybe 40-50 miles since, and last night had a rumbling from the back brake. I thought it was the hub disintegrating at first  but it turned out that one of the rear pads had a broken spring on the back, so the pad was floating a bit, and catching the holes in the rotor.

I've ordered some new pads (superstar components) but I'm going to the Peaks on Sat, so was hoping to just replace the spring in time for this weekend. Will be a bit annoying if the Superstar pads haven't arrived and I have to buy another set of pads just for saturday!

....Of course, if anyone has one lying around that they could send me, that would be great! :)

if you need it soon as possible, just ask ur LBS for a spring. They should have spare ones lying around.
  • Well, problem solved! Superstar Components, you are a SUPERSTAR!

Ordered some pads at 2am yesterday, they arrived at 9am today! Not bad, 31hrs from hitting enter to them hitting my doormat!

......so, my bike is fit for tomorrow in the Peaks, just hope I am! And hope the weather improves somewhat!

  • The shop didn't have the sintered pads in stock but I bought the Muc Off Brake cleaner to see if that would help. Sprayed the calipers, pads and discs and it's made a huge difference. Absolutely no noise at all. :D

You sprayed it on the braking surface of the pads? I thought you're just supposed to use it to clean the rotors (and make sure it's wiped off before braking)

Nope, the muc off stuff is safe to use on pads as well
