Can I upgarde to Tiagra/105 triple chainset from Sora?
Hi, am relativley new to road cycling and have purchasd a used Spesh Allez triple with Sora shifters and a Tiagra rear mech. Is it easy enough to upgrade the chainset to a 105/tiagra triple?? Im being offered one at a good price and have been told it would make a big diff., though am not sure that the Sora shifters I have will cause a problem with this..
Any help or advice on this would be great!
Thanks

No reason why not as long as the shifters are triple (obviously they are on an Allez triple!) Later, you may also want to upgrade to 105 levers as the downshift lever is a lot easier to use than the Sora's button (IMO). Also, I don't think the Sora front lever has a trimmming position to stop the chain from rubbing the front cage. The old levers would work though.0

The Sora triple is pretty heavy, but is actually pretty nice. And the steel rings wear pretty well. If your crank were not a Shimano item, I might be more inclined to swap it. Another option you have is to swap out the chainrings for lighter items, e.g. TA or Stronglight. There's nothing wrong with the crankarms atmo.0

I was surprised to find that a TA triple with the lighter Carmina cranks and standard Shimano bottom bracket weighs precise 1kg - exactly the same as the 105 triple hollowtech 2 + bearings. The 105 is more bulky but I guess the hollow cranks and tubular b/b make up for it. As acorn_user says, both would be lighter than the Sora. The Tiagra HT2 triple is 80g heavier than the 105.0 -
drifting OT I know, but to clarify: (recent) Sora's do have trim on the front.0

I've just removed an old (about 5 yrs) Sora crankset and BB and replaced it with a 105 HT II BB and Tiagra Compact. Only thing I had to do other than the actual swapping was readjust the cable tension.0

instead of getting another triple, why not get a 105 or tiagra compact, unless you need a large outer ring but also with small gears. compacts will save you a lot more weight. i think the new sora is like the tiagra shifters, they are double/triple compatible?0

I bought a Spec Allez triple a couple of years ago, however they didnt have a triple in stock, so they had to convert the double to a triple.
Anyway, I've had it a while and just found the time to start using it. After fettling with the front deurailleur I've come to the conclusion they've not swapped this because I can only set it up to use 2 of the 3 chainrings. Not great but tbh I want to convert is back to a double (prob a compact).
I know I obviously need to buy the compact chainring & crank but what I don't know is if the Sora shifters I have can go from Triple to Compact. Anybody have any experience? They are a couple of years old I would say.

what soras are they? 7,8 or 9 speed?0 -
They're 8 speed....0

i think your soras are double specific, i cannot be 100% sure. it's strange that your lbs would swap out the stock double with a triple but without replacing the front mech and the shifters. front deraillerus are specific to either double (include compacts) or triple specifc, the two are not interchangeable. but since you are planning to go compact, this shouldn't be a problem.
i got a little confused at fisrt as the latest tiagra 4400 9s are double/triple compatible.
i hope other members of the forum can confirm this.0 -
I think they just the deurailleur that's not been swapped. I'm pretty sure the lever is a triple but the deurailleur doesnt have the travel to span all 3 chainrings.
Would a triple shifter be double compatible?
Cheers for all your help. Trying to avoid spending more cash than necessary!

MM - for minimum spend, why not just put on a triple front derailleur ? £16.59 at edinburgh cycles. job done. you'll spend a lot more changing to compact and it surely won't be value for money?0

if you are sure your sora 8s are triple specific then i think you will have to chage the shifters for upgrading to a compact. having said that, i run a triple XT mountain bike shifter with a road double front mech and it works fine on my flat bar road bike. so my suggestion would be to buy the compact chianset first, put it on and see how the front mech/shifter work out. if it doesn't, then you can go ahead and get a new shifter (perhaps upgrade to 9 or 10 speed all together?)...of course you have the option of staying with what you have now and not do anything to the bike which is the most economical option.
i also want to wait and see what other people say on here, you know, other opinions or perhaps some other way out...0 -
Thanks for your thoughts akcc - gives me something to think about while it pours down at the weekend....

In reply to the original post I can't see how a change from a Sora chainset to even Dura-Ace would make a "big difference". Big difference to what? A bit lighter and stiffer maybe but if you were blindfolded you'd never be able to tell the difference. Save the cash and upgrade the wheels at some point, then you will notice a difference.0
