Looks like I will need to replace my Jalco GX460 front wheel on my winter bike. Any recommendations? I've looked at Shimano RS10 and R500. Mavic Aksiums are creeping up a bit in price but might be worth it... Should I go for lots of spokes on a winter bike?

  • Hi,
High on bikes sell RS20's for £100 on ebay and offers brilliant service, delivered next day if ordered early enough. Seem to ride very well, very responsive and feel much lighter than they actually are. I weigh 86 kgs and don,t seem to suffer any brake rub.

No idea about the rs10s, but Ive heard of reliability issues with the r500s, though a while agao they were going for 65ish on ebay - a bit of a steal. I would have a look around second hand - thats what I did when I was looking - for some MAvic Askiums/Fulcrum Racing 7s/Rs20s.

In the present/recent past I've owned R500's R550's, RS20's and 5600's - the 5600's/R550's have been the best performing - the RS20's seem to be the best built, followed closely by the 5600's - for a winter ride, the RS20 front at £50 seems like an adequate enough buy - you could go for something sturdier again though (Mavic)? - up to you.

Happy with my Aksiums (the heavier 2007 models). They've done 14 months trouble free.
In the same time I had the supplied wheels from my Allez Sport (Alex AT400 on Spesh hubs) trued 3 times.before finally being consigned to the turbo.
Managed to get them for £110 from Chain Reaction at the time.

Not so happy with the Racing 7s I've had since July. :(
  • Sorry about the repeated post don't understand how that happened.

I believe some of the earlier 500's had spoke tension problems judging by the number of posters searching for spare spokes  I'm sure Shimano have sorted the problem since

I can vouch for the RS10's bought some 6 months ago and they are performing fine so far and I'm a heavy 17.9 stone I couldn't see any difference between the RS10's and RS20's other than marketing and £30.00

    Hi
why not have a look at the Quest como wheels, at www.questbikes.co.uk These wheels were very highly rated by bikeradar. They are also very cheap and suitable for the heavier rider.

My training bike's Aksiums are great - had then 20 months or so and given them a good battering - perfect.

One quick tweak of a couple of spokes just after buying them (to keep the wheels true within 1mm) and not touched since......
