Does a new chainset = new chain and cassette?

Have ordered a new SLX double and bash chainset. Have just been thinking though - does this mean I also need a new chain and hence a new cassette?

If not, why not since if you get a new chain you are meant to get a new cassette and vice versa. Does the same not apply to a new chainset?

My drivetrain has done about 1000 miles.

Cheers

  • Cassetts should last a hell of alot longer than a chain as there are no proper moving parts unlike a chain but after 1000 offroad miles id say get a new cassette just incase it suddenly starts to go.
If you origionaly had a triple chain set then it would be better to either shorten the chain or replace it as you will not be using the expected 3rd ring so there will be lots more slack than usual.

The problem with chain drive systems of any sort is that if you only replace one worn part at a time, then it will wear faster.

The rule of thumb with motorbike drives is - replace the chain, replace the gearbox and wheel sprockets at the same time. But you can sometimes get away without doing this on a pushbike. That said, it all depends on how worn the stuff is anyway.

Depending on what your cassette is, you may get away with it but I would definitely replace the chain anyway.

Cassettes will last so long as the chain is regularly changed. If it is not and allowed to wear excessively then the cassette will wear to to match the worn chain. Fit a new chain and it will jump on the worn cassette. If you've not changed your chain in those 1000 miles, you might need to change everything. But you may as well suck and see before spending.

is the chain worn? have you measured the wear?
    does the cassette look worn?

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

12 links measures just over 12 1/16". The cassette looks OK as far as I can see.

I'm thinking of using the chainset that I am removing to perhaps build another bike for someone else. I guess it would make sense to also move the cassette and chain over to the other bike so that they can all 'wear together"?
