Upgrade to Campagnolo Shamal Ultras?

On a slightly different issue, my LBS seems much keener on hubs with sealed bearings rather than traditional loose bearing types, presumably with both Campagnolo and Shimano using the later there is no issue here?
Same outfit that was pushing the Mavic route rather than Campagnolo. (Sells both)
based purely on unscientific experience of mavic, shimano and campagnolo hubs I would say shimano and campag spin better than Mavic.0 -
On the loose bearing vs sealed:
Loose bearings roll better (as you can accurately tighten them) but usually one race is built into the hub, so if you don't keep it clean then you can write of the whole hub.
Sealed bearings degrade over their use, so they start stiff and and get looser with age. When they get play you replace both races and the bearings in one go. They also don't need nearly as much maintanence as they're sealed.
The choice really depends on how work shy you are!0 -
I love the way my DA's roll
I don't know what the difference (other than weight, which tbh at the amounts we're talking is not that important) would be between the Tune hubs I've ordered or some 2007 Centaurs. I just love the look and bling factor of the Tunes...0 -
Losing weight, especially rotating weight, should in theory make you faster so a wheelset built with Tune hubs should mean you expend less effort to maintain a speed of 20 mph than a pair built with the Centaur hubs. I think.
I have a two pairs of wheels with Tune hubs and have never had any problems with them. They've probably done 5000 miles combined.0 -
I would love a set of Tune hubs, but unfortunately at present my budget simply won't stretch that far.
Record is probably as far as I could go. I'll get a nice set of Tunes though one day I hope - I'm a real sucker for nicely machined goodies (but then who isn't...)0 -

You'd have to try pretty hard to beat Record IME. Although Tune are lighter I don't think they are a better hub.0 -
Where the weight is on the wheel is just as important - a lightweight hub won't much as much difference as a lighter rim - low spoke-count / deep rim wheels often have quite beefy rims in comparison to a shallow rims - as much as 170g difference if you compare a DT1.1 with a DT1.2, for example. About the lightest alloy rims you can get are about 350g - but keeping them straight and true can be tricky as even spoke tension is far more critical.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

+1 on that. Who makes a BETTER hub than Record(or DA)? There are costlier ones, different colored ones, fancier looking ones, etc. but BETTER? I doubt it. A set of Record or DA's will roll as smoothly as any, need minimal maintenance, last longer than most,
are easily worked on, and you can actually GET parts for them. Aside from bling I see
no reason to buy hubs from some "Boutique" manufacturer who may or may not be around next year. Buy the good stuff.

+1
I went with Tune purely for the bling.
Otherwise I'd've got some more DAs (which I bloomin' well love!)0 -
Well, that sounds good to me! There is something nice about the bling stuff like Tune and Hope, but it does certainly cost...
I guess for the bling factor you can even get a ceramic upgrade for the Record hubs...
As long as I have a tough set of wheels which will last a long time, i'll be very happy!0 -
Well, Hope Pro3 front hubs are half the price of DA/Record/Tune etc and are very good...0
-
They are a good chunk cheaper, I hadn't realised that. Interesting stuff0

Despite some interesting and reasonably priced custom made wheel options from my LBS I couldn't quite come to terms with what would have been the unknown for me and went for factory wheels this time. I ordered the Shamal Ultras which arrived today.
I am slightly underwhelmed by the grey colour and was wondering if the gold colour might have been better, just kiding!. Nice looking wheel though, can't wait to get em on the bike.
I've opted to use Michelin Pro3's with them, I hope these arn't on the list of "diffcuilt to fit".
Thanks for your advice along the way, may be I'll go custom built next time.0
